Using a rifle for humane dispatch
I would ask my FEO but he's away for a couple of weeks.
Can a rifle used for vermin control on cleared land be used for the humane dispatch of a lame sheep?
Thanks

Re: Using a rifle for humane dispatch
I know you have asked about sheep.
For humane dispatch of deer some of the rules do not apply - for example you can use any "suitable firearm", you do not have to have permission or approval for the land ...
There is a leaflet covering Deer at: http://www.bestpracticeguides.org.uk/cu ... patch.aspx which covers how te law would see dispatching a deer.
Hopefully, common sense prevails and similar rules/advise are there for other animals.

Being bored - I did a quick search and found:
http://www.hsa.org.uk/Resources/Publica ... es/TN7.pdf
Does not answer your question but is worth reading.
And are you a member of BASC or one of the other organisations? Id so, give them a call.

I'll give BASC a call.
Re: Using a rifle for humane dispatch
Your fac needs to specify for humane despatch of livestock and other animals. Some forces add it as a matter of course.Others you have to ask for it.

We'll be applying for 'human despatch' on our ticket if the cull starts, got to even up the odds...

Can you despatch* me to Cape Town in First Class on BA and I will promise not to dispatch any of your relatives that I meet!
*Yes, I know, both spellings can be used in each context, but most tend to use "E" for sending and "I" for reports or terminating.

Depends where you are I suppose; common practice in the Highlands & Islands. My crofter friend was despaching one of his sheep (injured) at edge of a road just as a police car came along (sod's law). Cops stopped 'cos they'd never seen a Calico rifle before.CDM5 wrote:I would ask my FEO but he's away for a couple of weeks.

Re: Using a rifle for humane dispatch
First - (as stated by someone else), you need humane dispatch of livestock on your ticket. Permission to do so and for that specific firearm.CDM5 wrote:I would ask my FEO but he's away for a couple of weeks.

2nd - It depends upon the rifle and calibre. A centrefire with expanding bullets is generally a no-no. Essentially they don't want numpties usin high velocity ammo and/or expandingbullets standing next to livestock and pulling the trigger.
A 22lr or centrefire (pistol calibre) rifle is usually fine. I have permission for a 22lr and a lever action, 45lc on mine.
