5 SCOTS (Canterbury)

#1 Post by ashhow »

Hello all, as some of you may be aware, as part of the defence cuts, 5 SCOTS is going to be reduced to a company size for ceremonial purposes.

Now 5 SCOTS have their base adjacent Sturry road in Canterbury and PWRR (TA). When the regulars are all sacked, Canterbury Christ Church University is going to be using the base as student accommodation. Now the reason why this is relevant to this forum is because 5 SCOTS have an excellent 25m Full bore range. Since Canterbury lacks any public rifle shoots, this could be an ideal target for various shooting organisations to try and get hold of, as we all know it would cost them far more to knock down the range than sell it.

Thoughts anyone?

Contact the NRA, they are supposed to have an understanding with the MoD about exploring the purchase of decommissioned ranges.

Funny.. I was just thinking today about how one would go about starting up a club and range (I was mainly thinking about PSG though)

Will get round to ringing the NRA about it at some point, would be a shame to see it go. Not that I'd really ever get a chance to shoot there, would just be nice for my fellow students to have someone to shoot fullbore a little closer.

Get hold of the NRA NOW, right NOW, before 5 SCOTS leave and the range is decommissioned. If you get permission to use the range they might not go through the formal range closure procedure. It'll cost you time and money and lots of paper to get the thing reopened otherwise!

Shame about 5 Scots and the closing of Howe Barracks. I think Canterbury have had a Bn in residence since the time of Oliver Cromwell!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Are Canterbury Christchurch buying the range as well as the base, or just the base?

Also, who at the NRA would be the right person to speak to?

Just the base for student accommodation, not sure how much of it as it's huge. Doubt they will buy the range though.
