Loose ammunition costs FAC's

A family friend (not mine) visits from a hot foreign country and asks to borrow a warm coat for a trip to the big city to see the sights.
Whilst in the big city they put hand in coat pocket and pull out a dozen .22lr rounds of ammunition.
Realising that they should not have them and that they could get into trouble if found with them, they hand them in to a Police Station in the big city.

Police make report as is necessary and arrange for ammunition to be destroyed.

Someone will be getting a visit from their Firearms Enquiry Team.
I am not sure what defence could possibly be used for having ammunition loose in a coat pocket whilst not shooting.

Shooters beware, bad practises lose licences - and probably family friends,

They could point out the occasions that the Police themselves had left ammunition in inappropriate places with little or no legal action taken!

They could, but that would be to say that one group of people are on mass to be held accountable for the actions of one person.
As shooters we are particularly sensitive to such behaviour and should not condone such action.

Better that decisions should be made on a case by case basis and if need be that individual dealt with

that should read "the multiple times Police have left firearms and ammunition lying around" razz

Yes the Police and MOD have lost much kit.

Should you have the answer as to how to avoid this happening then I suggest that you share it with the world.
I am sure the range office at Bisley could tell of many an item that has been handed in belonging to civilian shooters that has been left behind.
Clearly losing kit it is a problem that is faced by people the world over and to suggest that any one group of people is any more responsible than another is a little naive.

I have no answer, because mistakes do happen, however your original post suggested that the loss of an FAC was a proportionate punishment for "bad practices" I merely pointed out that mistakes are not just the province of the public. however if you wish to discuss how to stop this happening, then it should be easier for a body like the Police or MOD to limit such mistakes, as they have, or should have, systems in place that require at least 2 people to make mistakes before weapons or ammo can be "lost" we as shooters should also have a series of checks (and I am sure most of us do) however we are for the most part individuals, and as such usually only have ourselves to check things, then occasionally things may go "tits up", what is needed here is education not revocation.
PS I am with you on the sign01 for the person handing in the ammo, and I truly believe that the Police at the station had no option but to write up the incident, its how it's dealt with now that is the issue.

I called into a petrol station one afternoon on the way back from the range, went to pay for the fuel and groped in my pocket for some cash and nearly offered the cashier a duff .223 round I had been given whilst on RCO duties. Easily done...
