Bolts in your rifles

I remove bolts where possible and lock them in ammo cabinet,but kinda makes a mockery of it when i have a semi-auto 22,a lever action and shotguns too. :lol:

I have on two occasions though driven a mile then had to pull over because i couldnt remember sticking the bolts in my carry case.

One thing to think about is , when you have the bolt OUT of a normal bolt action rifle ( ie , cock on opening ) , is the firing pin spring is cocked ( under tension ) , it would be better to have it un-cocked for the sake of the spring , BUT as most bolts are difficult to un-cock/ re-cock out side the receiver , most that store their bolts out of the gun , are left in the cocked state .

Sorry to dig up this old thread. Can I confirm my understanding of the following rifles as I want to remove my bolts to try to free up some cab space:

No4 Enfield, cocks on closing so the bolt can be removed and stored as is.

Mauser K98, cocks on opening so requires magic to release the tension when the bolt is removed

Rem 700, cocks on closing so the bolt can be removed and stored as is.

Mosin Nagant (possible intended purchase) I think cocks on opening but not sure.

Clarifications / corrections appreciated.

Remi 700 cocks on opening. You only need a loop of cord to decock though. No magic!

Can demo next range day or or just google. Its easy.

Bolts out, de-cocked, separate safe. Transported separately (in a bag that stays with me at all times), only fitted in rifle on the firing point...........that is, when I remember to re-cock them first......... :cool2:

With the attendant risk of arriving at the range sans bolt. I keep mine in the gun now, it's locked away, should be good enough, especially as the ammunition is in another safe.

Best practice is out and stored elsewhere secured, also suggest if left for any length of time you "ease the spring" of the firing pin as this can lead to spring compression and will require replacing. Also best to travel with bolt out as have been stopped by polive during "routine" checks and they like it this way, dont give them any opportunity to revoke your FAC. Rgs Phil25

I always take mine out and store them in the lockable ammo safe on my cabinet. Having seen oodles of people turn up to range days minus bolts I always fit mine back into my rifles the night before I go shooting!

How many people bag everything up the night before and leave it on the bedroom floor ready for a very early start?

Or more to the point how many people are prepared to admit doing this?

What is wrong with that? Do you think someone is going to sneak in and steal them while you are asleep? It could happen sure but the chances are very slim.
