The 338 Federal was one I was considering, but I thought the pressure was on the high side for my Ishapore, plus I just knew that the powers that be, would confuse it with a 338LM!

Hmmm, that .338 Federal seems a useful concept, but we take it off the shelf ammunition is either non existent or scarce this side of the pond? That would mean taking up pawloading and we have been trying to avoid yet another hobby...

Still... just a barrel change you say ?

338 Federal is a relatively new round - someone in the UK will be able to get it in. However, the fact you want subsonic ammunition means you will have to learn to reload!

So, a distinct possibility is a Joe West tactical stock, a .338 Federal barrel and a 6x42 Lisenfeld or Kapps scope. That should be entirely adequate for us out to 600 yards. Perhaps with a nice big moderator and some hefty cast boolits...

In a word - yes!

You will need to check with our resident casting guru's regarding cast boolits in 338.

But that is why 358 Win got my vote - I could use 357 cast boolits. BTW, I'm not sure if you've picked up on the fact that both (338 Fed and 358 Win) are just 308 Win necked up to their respective calibres, which why we're saying you just need a new barrel. Just make sure the twist rate is suitable!

Hmmm, but for our purposes, shooting out to 300 yards and, sometimes, 600 yards, wouldn't the .338 Fed be better than ikkle pistol bullets?

Yes very much so , I considered the 358 win but the 338 bullet selection is just much better and you can get match bullets so no need for expanding on your ticket ?

Hmmm, this is fast becoming a velocitudinous vortex drawing us towards pawloading...

We'll see what Dromia or Dodgyrog has to say regarding cast .338 boolits. Someone nudge 'em in this direction if you see 'em first.

Cast for .338" seems to be getting popular over the pond as there are some good moulds available for this calibre, albeit of the limited run type. I have few designs in my mould collection. Here is one of them and Al still has a few available "off the shelf".

I have the Ranch Dog design as well but it is primarily designed as a hunting boolit.

:cool2: I'm glad tackb answered that because I never mentioned using pistol bullets out to 600! My design brief was out to 400m - for which I would have used 35 cal rifle bullets. emrolleyes

Like Tackb has reiterated, I found the selection of 35 cal rifle bullets was limiting but if it wasn't other factors it would not have been insurmountable.
