Improving a Ruger 96 accuracy

#1 Post by wildrover77 »

Anybody got any tips.

I bought a ruger 96 in .22wmr and converted it to 17hmr.

I am struggling on accuracy and am considering free floating the barrel( it is the same as 10/22 with barrel band)

After stoneing the trigger I am getting 50p sized groups at 75 yards.

After reading a lot on the net, I am undecided, some say free float the barrel, some say free float with pressure pad, some say bed barrel and free float action.

How many different brands of ammo have you tried..... they're not all the same.

Bed the action and free float the barrel. Then, with the most accurate ammunition you have tried, get someone else to shoot it too and look at their results.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

Apparently this is accepted practice on 10 22's and 96 in the states. The reason being the barrel is heavy relative to the light weight alloy action. This is why when free floating the barrel a lot of people advise bedding the first 2 inches or using a pressure pad.
