As my eyes get older I'm thinking of buying an Eagle Eye for my TR. The difficulty I have is deciding which strength I should get. They do +.30,.50 and .75. Is there any way of working out which would be best? Is it a feature of my normal prescription or is it just a case of more is better? I'd expect to use it for the normal run of full-bore TR from 300 - 1,000 yards.

Assuming you have normal, 6/6 distance vision, corrected by spex or contact lenses if necc., you could try a +.30D (prob more like +0.25D) if you are aged up to approx 60 yrs. Over 60 you will poss need a +.50D lens. This is a guide. I would strongly suggest trying both first against a target. I doubt if you'll need +0.75D.

You will be magnifying the target so will need to increase your front aperture also.

Forget the 0.75 as they are against UKNRA and ICFRA rules if I remember correctly.

I use a 0.5 lens in my 30mm foresight at all ranges despite being a mere 37 years old and having excellent vision when corrected for short-sightedness. I originally went to this size of foresight and strength of lense for sight picture reasons at long range, but actually the main benefit I have found is being able to read the target numbers at any distance with a corresponding reduction in the number of cross shots I've fired. The main downside to having such a strong lens for most shooters is that you will be able to see the wobble magnified by 1.bowl which can be a bit offputting.

It is definitely worth trying out both powers to see what will suit you the best.

PS - John makes a good point about foresight apertures. I use the following with a 0.5 lens: 300x = 5.8mm, 500x = 6.0mm, 600x = 5.5mm, 900x = 5.4mm, 1000x = 5.2mm
PPS - Putting optics in the front of your rifle demands rain shades and good we weather discipline. I remember the washout during St. George's I that destroyed a lot of people's Grand Aggs the first year that eagle eyes became legal.

If it is any help I am at The Imperial in July and I have trial lenses (test powers) you could try by looking at a target to see the effect.
