Another point- reloading tracer, I didn't know the bullet heads were available?

JS

I had my tracer heads (.308 calibre) sent to me by a friend over in the USA but there are plenty sellers here in the UK. Expect to pay around 15 quid per 100 from places like Simplyammo etc. A quick internet search will bring up a variety of other sources but the dealer I've quoted is the nearest to me (no connection otherwise). I haven't seen any .22 tracer for sale over here in UK but I know it does exist. Possibly a bit OTT for shooting Bugs Bunny and his mates but it would look good

On another note, recent changes to regulations concerning civilian use of tracer on MOD ranges means that we cannot use this type of ammo at the present time. I understand that the various shooting organisations (NRA etc) are in discussion with the MOD concerning this matter so hopefully we'll see a common sense decision emerge in the near future. Just don't hold your breath in the meantime.

Laying down in HMS Nelson range between Malcolm & Sarah Cooper, shaking like a whippet, last shot knowing I needed a good score for the club team, yanking the trigger with eyes half closed & then looking up after to see a good last bull & my 99 beating his 98 & her 97.................. ONCE ok it was ONCE but it counted then.. :-!

In a similar vein, my last shot in St. George's II back in 2011 is probably my most satisfying. The pressure was off as I knew that I'd no chance of making the final no matter how well I shot, as conditions were easy and I was carrying forward a 73.7 from the 1st stage. Stuck over in the middle of range 18 with a mild righthand wind, it was mostly playing with quarters as we went through the shoot and it was about shot 12 before I realised that I'd not dropped a vee.

Shot 13 was wobbly. (but in)

Shot 14 was VERY wobbly. (but in)

For shot 15 I got a bit of a grip and rationalised that as I'd already put 14, that last one really shouldn't be much of an issue. Check alignment, breathe in, breathe out, take the 1st stage. Squeeze through the line of the barrel. Bang. Vee bull, slightly low-left of centre.

1000 yards on electronics watching the V's go in, I was tempted to stop shooting at 5 but carried on for a perfect score for the 10.

Most memorable shooting as opposed to single shot was McQueens at 600m with a proper Huns Head that was hidden in the grass on the mantlet and was coming up at about the same rate as I could load so very challenging. I shot the target off the pole in the end and it is now hanging on a spare bit of wall in the workshop.

With a stalker during one of his level 2 stalk. We snuck in on a group of Hinds until approx 150 yds, he rushed the shot and gut shot her. She bunched up before racing off up a slope. I quickly dropped to my backside, rested the forestock across my knees, took the slack up in the sling and 'barked' at her. She stopped, turned and I shot her with a single round to the heart.
The range was just over 400. Not a great distance but it was a snap shop, under testing circumstances and stopped her from suffering. I doubt the shot would have been so perfectly placed if I'd had the time to over-think it.

The most fun I've had in while shooting was at this years IHAMs meeting shooting snaps with my SMLE - I've had a few attempts at the Trafalgar, but either cock-up a load or miss a few times...this time it just went like clockwork, and though not all bulls-eyes, all 15 were on the half-man target

However in my main disciplines (where I do sometimes care about the scores) of TR and GRCF I've never actually totally nailed it...

...so will just have to carry on until I am satisfied...

Anytime I actually hit what I have aimed at.
Sometimes just hitting the back wall of the range does it for me.

Out with some gillies and we'd just finished the graloch on a few hinds I'd shot and a hind stuck its head over a ridge to look at us nearly straight up and 350m away , they took out the rolly one casually said 'why don't you just shoot that one in the head ?' No pressure then I thought (we had been wacking targets at long range the day before ) so I settled behind a rock and squeezed a shot off , we'll bugger me it was perfect ! We sent the fittest to fetch it and I spent the rest of the week declining 800m head shots on deer !

Another time I was at a long range steel shooting place were sheep should worry and the 'expert' was explaining that anything over 100yds is unethical on deer , well I dialled a cross valley shot at 1000yds with my 260rem and took a shot at a little sitting fox steel , well bugger me I grazed the lh edge , certainly a dead deer if you we're to take a shot at a deer at that range ! There was a change of attitude from our instructor after that ! (Great bloke by the way , those who know him)

Red hind (wounded , not by me ) at 568 m dialled and dropped cleanly with my 308 and 168amax , wouldn't have taken the shot at a non wounded deer , there is always another day.

Boring morning stalking about to pack up , squirrel at about 12m , clean miss with same 308 !

Somebody's signature on one of the forums says , the more I practice the luckier I get , there is a lot of truth in that !

That's the truth. We regularly practice by blatting crows on a field ; spreading out rabbit carcasses at anything from 500-800yds and taking thencem as they land. However I'll never forget the medal buck I gave a haircut to at less than 40yds!

Overconfidence breeds contempt.
