whats it worth?

hi guys.

have been out today with a friend to buy a new shotgun and on our travels spotted a .308 f class rifle.

the rifles specs are

RPA quadlock action
30" BARTLIEN STAINLESS CUSTOM FLUTED barrel
custom F class stock
weaver rail
mid range 5-20 scope

the shop say this has around 100 rounds through it and it looks in good condition.

any thoughts on what this would be worth?

trying to decide if its worth buying or just sticking with my original idea

If you wanted a good gunsmith to put this package together for you, you could be looking at £3000 without the scope. Secondhand maybe £2000

But, if the barrel is past its best and you need another, then all you are buying is a Quadlock action bedded in a stock - say £1250

I'd offer £1500 without scope. For serious FTR you need a bit more than 5-20 power.

Action & Trigger - £1050 new
Barrel - £650 if really 100 rounds (get it borescope by someone who knows what they're doing before you believe this)
Stock - £500 to £2100 depending on what it is (wood lower end, fibreglass more and Gemini top end) new
Rail - £100 new
Scope - £750 - £1500 new

Making a few assumptions about these, you're looking at £3.5k to £4k new depending on the exact package. Secondhand with a barrel that new, maybe £3k max depending whether the other components are also nearly new. Lose the scope and you're down nearer £2.2k

Get the barrel checked though, as a worn barrel will reduce the price by the cost of a new one (£600 - £700 depending.)

I was thinking to offer £2k and tell them to hold the scope as I wanna mount a nightforce

If its the purple stocked one on guntrader (which it sounds to be going by the description) it looks a bit pricey at the advertised price at £3100, even with taking the scope off they probably won't take the 2k you're thinking about but it's always worth a go tongueout

Be carefully though as the advert shows 2 different weights and you would need to look carefully at what the weight really is if you are planning to have a go at F Class..... If going for FTR you would still need to add the weight of a bipod which it doesn't show as being included, this could put it over the FTR weight and into the open class where the 308 would probably not be competitive......

If you're not planning to compete then it's not a concern but it does limit you a bit if you ever decide to have a go.

thats the one, any thoughts? although the barrel might only have 100 rounds it seems like it was previously a 6.5mm so isn't as new as its made to sound.

not rely planning to compete at this point just have a bit of long range fun. fresh lick of paint and a night force scope and i think it could serve me well.

The long range fun can get very addictive so it's worth thinking a bit longer term perhaps?

At the end of the day it's horses for courses, if you like it go for it and enjoy but I'd probably have a look at what else is available for that sort of money first, have a look at Dolphins website for some comparisons, you might find something new that floats your boat for a similar price

If you decide on the one you originally looked at go for a deal, you might be lucky........

I agree with Matt, watch out for the weight. 16lb.16oz. is around 7.7Kgs which means should you wish to shoot F/TR in the league you only have 500 grams left for the bipod which limits you somewhat. Swapping the 'scope out may save a bit of weight however it is always a good idea to build slightly under weight so you do not have any problems at the weigh station.
