Accuracy International AW

#1 Post by happycallis »

Whats everyones views on the Accuracy International AW. Shot one at the Bisley Open Day and liked it a lot, probably as it was my best shoot all day  The size and confort of it seemed to suit my gangly frame really well out of everything I shot throughout the day.

Are they worth the money, I dont mind spending it if they are worth it. The guy that had it said it will fair well in F/TR and in TR (providing the iron sights are fitted). Anyone own one or have regulary used one?

At 6.5Kgs base weight the AW is going to be a push for TR which has a weight limit of 6.5Kgs. The limit for F/TR is 8.2kgs and woe betide you if you even go one gram above this so you need to be fairly imaginative to build an F/TR rifle with an AI however it can be done.

I am with Chuck on the choice of the AI/AE. The AE is not a Remington clone, it is not he Tescos value AI, it is every bit as accurate as any AW, the only difference is it is not as well suited to 6 months in the jungle as the AW. I know someone who placed his AE on the tailgate of a land rover which his wife then drove off in, by the time he had realised what had happened the AI/AE had bounced off the back and was lying in the field, a hard sun baked field. He looked it over and then took a shot to confirm zero, all was good and the day continued however they did have words that evening. Obviously it was his fault...

Closer to home I heard a massive thump one afternoon and called out to the Viking WTF (Crikey, what was that?) 'No worries she replied, it was your AI falling out of the cabinet. It shot perfectly to zero the following weekend and was used at 1000 yards as normal.

These days it looks like this which is exactly 9kgs.

The AI complements the flooring very nicely

Cheers for the replies so far guys, the likley hood of me entering a comp for TR is fairly slim but possible. Ill be more on the F/TR side of things to be honest. Whats the main difference between the AW and the AE then apart from not being able to live in the artic or jungle?

As for weight, I probably wont use a moderator so thats a little weight saved. As for bipods, how much do yours weigh ovenpaa? As I like the style of them.

The suppressor weighs 1090 grams, the bipod fitted is a Versapod at 570 grams. Differences between the AE and AW are:

The AE has a round receiver and is bolted to the chassis, the AW is a slab sided receiver and is bolted and bonded to the chassis.
The AW trigger can be removed without dropping the receiver off chassis.
The AW has a 3 position safety, this is an AE Mk1 so a 2 position safety
The bolts are interchangeable.
The AE Mk1 has a single stack 5 shot magazine whereas the AW has a double stack 10 shot magazine. later AE's are designed to accept the AICS magazine so double stack 5 or 10 shot.
The AE has a 24" barrel as standard whereas the AW is 26"
Sight rails are different.

That is about it apart from about GBP1500....

Cheers for that response ovenpaa, on an accuracy point of view will the 2" difference in barrel lengh make that much difference? As for the bipod which I should have be clearer on, I mean the one that you designed for F class.

Length matters and the 2" does make a difference of around 35-50fps however there is nothing to stop you sticking a longer barrel on the rifle to keep the best of both worlds. For F/TR you need to get bullets down to the target at a decent velocity, having said that I have happily shot 1000 yards with a 24" barrel however it does mean some fairly stout loads, I usually push a 155 at a tad over 2900fps through my AE

The AI actions are massively robust and will happily take anything you shoot put through them so you could easily go for a 30" barrel, a light 'scope, use a magazine follower instead of a magazine (Weight saving of around 170 grams)

My bipod is 675 grams in weight and 800,0mm wide and can build them to fit straight onto the AI accessory rail without having to resort to modifications to the rifle itself. I can immediately think of three AE owners who are shooting F/TR right now.
