The Savage is quite well thought of, not sure about the trigger though.

Consider a Barnard.

Simple, rugged, the supplied triggers are not bad, I fitted a jewel.

The Barnard should cope with any later attempts to blow it up as well!!

Have a go with mine next time we get together....just remember it might kick a bit (not being .223 and all that) clapclap

If you have optics, consider a Dolphin.

Thanks Maggot. Am thinking Barnard, it being the only alternative I have seen prior to being made into a rifle. It impressed me at the time but I was just getting started, really. Might be a good opportunity.

Not sure what accuracy difference I might see, but the bolt face and ease of disassembly impressed.

Mine is more accurate than I can shoot Tom, about .3MOA seems about the norm until you go to 1000 where things spread out a bit.

The ability to choose a barrel helps, Mik has a huge stock of all sorts.

Mine has a Lilja 3 groove.

My Savage / Broughton .308 shoots similarly tbh, but considerably better than the factory Savage 223. I think the barrel is, as you say, probably the most vital bit.

Slightly off-topic... what is your Lilja like for cleaning? My Broughton took < 10 patches total, even after the open day abuse - very happy.

RPA Quadlock and trigger, Border barrel. Drop it in a System Gemini stock and a very British rifle, shooting a very British comp...

Swap the bolt-head - easy and cheap to do and get a heavy match barrel put on it by a decent gunsmith. Unless you want to spend some money.............
