Best 1,000 mard calibre

Right, oomanses, what do you consider to be the best calibre for use at 1,000 mards*

Our thoughts tend to favour the 6.5x55 Swedish for its ability to retain supersonic velocity out to that distance, but we are sure some of you may disagree.








* The mard is a unique measure, being either metres or yards, often found on English firing ranges after metrication. Labelled as 1000m, it is actually 1000 yards.

I use the 6.5-08 (260 Rem).

I don't think it matters too much what cartridge it goes in, the 6.5 bullet is one of the best calibres I've come across for accuracy.

260Rem is so much better than the .308Win, with similar rifles and target loads the 260 had 1/4 of the wind required on the same range and point, and drops were almost the same as the 300WinMag (according to the 300WM turret I had on my Leupold). It was only one minute different at 1000yards and the same as the WinMag from 200 to 600yards, that was with a 140gn and 142gn SMK bullet.

The calibre that is currently flavour of the month for 1000yd F class Open is 7mm/284 in it's many forms (Straight 284, Shehane, WSM, etc).
The bullets used in the 180 grain weight area have a high BC and seem to do the job. I started benchrest using the 6.5 x 55 Ackley Improved which at the time seemed to be cutting edge.
When I started F class it soon became obvious that it could generally not beat the 7mm in any form in windy conditions, so I changed over.
There are other F class shooters using high BC 30 calibre bullets with weights over 200 grains very successfully as well.
A plus for the straight 284 and Shehane versions is longer barrel life over the WSM.
Other shooters may have other ideas of 'best' but at 1000yds 7mm in various guises seems to be 'it'

Being a TR Shooter (Jacket and sling), I am restricted to the humble .308Win. I have been known to put a lot of F Class shooters (using exotic calibre's) to shame when shooting on the 1000yd F Class Target.

Factory traditional - 6,5x55 is a very good starting point and certainly has the legs to get to 1000 yards.

I have been shooting the Vikings 6,5-284 for a while and it works with 139 Scenars to 1200 yards however just recently I have shifted to the 6,5x47 with pointed 123 Scenars and it is an absolute revelation, low recoil, cheap(ish) to reload in that the brass is fairly pricey but after that powder loads are low and bullets are sensibly priced and it is superbly accurate out of a 26" barrel.

When I used rifles in my day job in 1992-1995 in the South African Army I used the M82A1A out VERY effectively to 2000 mards with 615gr incendiary devices (@ 3500fps ) on vehicles, and the 350gr’ers (@ 4200fps ) was extreamly effective on man shape targets at the same distance. Both projectiles would hold sub moa at 1500 mards. The Barrett is one of the smoothest 50cals to shoot. Towards the end of my stint, they replaced the 50's with 338 lapua magnums, lighter recoil, and easier to load for as the armourers made up all your rounds in a bespoke mannor to give you the accuracy of "home loads"

The only problem you'll find in the Uk is that you'll struggle to use It. You'll also notice the balance in your bank account will deplete sooner than you can bat an eyelid.

I'm in the process of building a 6x47 lapua ,mmmm well see how that sucker will work with a 30 1:8 twist Lother walther barrel hahahaha.
