Southern Gun Co - Barrel Nut

Evening all,

So I bought myself a nice new Samson Evo handguard for my SGC AR. Thought I'd have a go at fitting it this evening, only to find that my AR tool (a bit like this one:) doesn't fit the barrel nut. The barrel nut has holes for a 2-pin tool and my supposedly standard AR tool has a 3-pin tool for free-float barrel nuts.

Do SGC use a proprietary barrel nut, or do I just have the wrong tool? If it is an SGC-specific nut, does anyone know if a standard AR barrel nut can be used instead? The Samson Evo handguard requires a standard nut, like this one:

If the barrel & upper receiver are made to standard AR15 specs, then a standard AR barrel nut should fit.
The standard thread in 1.25" dia & 18tpi, it all depends upon SGC using a proprietary thread, although I'd be very surprised if they did.

Bottom line if everything is standard then yes it should fit.

That's the best answer I can give, sorry if that's no good.

On bobs AR's the barrel nut is not standard, I bought an Samson hand guard and got. Gunsmith put me a standard ar barrel nut on. You can get standard nuts from lantac for a tenner.

Thanks for the replies. I already have a standard barrel nut which I bought at the same time as the hand guard.

Rburro2, do you recall if the SGC nut had a standard thread on it? If so, then it's just removing the non-standard SGC nut that's going to be tricky. Should be an easy job after that.

Does your AR tool have a hook & pin? If so thats what you need to use to get your existing barrel nut off.

There were rumours about that SGC use loctite on their barrel nuts. I might have mis-remembered that and I do hope it proves to be unfounded, because it will make your simple job much harder if they have.

The thread on the non-standard nut on my LRA9 was the same as the standard nut, i just had to get the SGC one off first - mine wasn't loctited (such a word??) on, or if it was braying the nut off with a big hammer with a punch in one of the holes sorted it out

I did do a bit of damage to it but i'm never going to use it again so i wasn't bothered

If you want to minimise the damage to the pin holes on the nut you can use a brass/alloy drift (punch) instead of a steel one.
