Winchester '73 44-40
(or if you want to shoot it regularly, go for a modern one in 45 Colt, its easier to reload).

Re: Best .44 carbine ?
Rossi from Brazil does a nice copy of the Winchester 1892 and offers them in both .44-40 and .44 Magnum (among other chamberings). I bought one in .44 Magnum the early 90s and my wife has one about 8 years old in .44-40. Both are good quality carbines - accurate and reliable. They come in standard carbine and 'trapper' (16 inch barrel) lengths and in blued steel or stainless. My .44 magnum also handles .44 Special for plinking.
I don't know where you'd find one, but if you could, the old Ruger 'Deerstalker' semi-auto carbine in .44 Magnum would be a good choice. They have been out of production for many years, but they do occasionally turn up for sale.

Yes I rather thought as much. Pity, you're missing out on a lot of fun! That's yet another reason I like NZ over Australia - they are in almost the same boat as the UK - sold a pack of lies about how banning certain types of firearms would make everybody so much safer. As they say on the Tui beer ads here: "Yeah, Right" .

I like my Rossi 20" .44 magnum. It is essentially a Winchester 92 copy, much handier and more slick than the Marlin.

Oh ? We thought Marlins were meant to be pretty good, so if the Rossi is better...

Re: Best .44 carbine ?
+1 for the Rossi. I've got the stainless steel octagonal barrel and its never missed a beat. Full gun strip is a bit tricky the first time you do it but it gets easier. It doesn't need much cleaning beyond what is easily accessible. Also mine cost £500 new which is almost £400 less than the comparable Marlin. If you want a scope you can buy an offset mount quite easily.

Our club has a Marlin in .44 Mag, it takes abuse and just keeps on working.
