Got it from a guy in the US on www.theakforum.net. I think I'll be using the iron sights as my replacement stock wouldn't clear a side rail. Will have a look for a guide and will keep my eyes out for the locking hardware on for sale boards...

I'm intending to use reduced loads on a gallery range - do you know of any good sources of information for this?

I would have a look on the AK47 subforum on ar15.com, i'm sure someone will have some info on reduced loads in the ammunition section.

Loads of us download for our AK's: 6gr Red Dot powder + 140gr lead gas checked bullet keeps it nicely inside our gallery range limits, comes out about the same as a .44 special.

How do these Romanian AKMS compare with the izhmash?, I saw this one over on guntrader with wooden grips, thought it looked nice, with a nice folding stock it would look better.

Have shot both and there is nothing in it - just that the Romy takes all AK mags wheras the Saiga needs Saiga specific mags unless you add the bullet guide - also some of the Saiga's have the civilian chamber which sticks an unusual bulge in the neck of the fired cases.

The Romanian AKM/AKMS are as close as you can get to an original Soviet AKM/AKMS (once some nice Soviet laminated handguards etc are fitted) in the UK.If anything the finish isn't quite as good as a Saiga but then again AKs aren't meant to look pretty.The biggest plus with a Saiga is that it is made in Russia at the Izhmash factory, but to be honest it isn't what it used to be and if I could get one in straight pull I would take a Bulgarian AK, even Mikhail Kalashnikov himself is quoted as saying the Bulgarians produce some of the best quality AK variants available today.The Saigas are based on the AK-100 series which are in turn based on AK-74 bolt and bolt carrier dimensions, which are smaller than AK-47/AKM components and not interchangable.
With regard to the chamber step that stamps a ring around the neck of the case when fired, this I believe is only on 7.62x39 Saigas and is so Russian law enforcement can differentiate between cases from a military barrel and a civilian barrel as military barrels do not have the step that creates the bulged ring.It is pretty rare to have a Saiga that does not have the stepped chamber but not unheard of especially in the States.The .223/5.56 Saigas don't have the chamber step as a rule as they are built for export only.Another point to note is it is rare to find a .223/5.56 Saiga with the classic AK mag well 'dimples', which doesn't help if you want to replicate an AK-74.

The one in the link has got a folding stock,its a polymer AK-100 series sidefolder which can be changed for a skeleton sidefolder.
