Did you find you had to modify the stock to clear the selector switch, in particular the screw head? Mine seems to want to rub against it. I can't imagine that the spacing of the receiver holes is different between Romanian and Russian / Bulgarian / Yugo AKs so just interested really....I'll modify the stock if necessary but will wait for the proper locking mech. to arrive before I do anything.
I had to carefully file a very small amount off the selector lever head for it to clear, the end result isnt noticeable at all
all.The receiver holes are actually around 8mm closer to the barrel end on a Romanian than they are on a Russian/Polish AKMS but the cut out on the righthand strut still clears the selector lever ok.One thing to be aware of in fitting a Russian/Polish mechanism is the difference in the position of the locking pin, its vertical on the Russian/Polish one so new notches have to be dremelled for the locking pin and two holes drilled for the external locking piece on the righthand side. The Russian/Polish stamped stock should be nearly straight out the back when folded out as opposed to angled down like the Romanian one as the locking pin holes on the struts are in different positions hence the difference in stock angles.

That's great thanks, thought I was going mad. I'll have a go at the modifications when the proper locking mechanism arrives. By the way, did you see I responded to your '.223 Saiga wanted' thread?

No problem, if you get stuck with anything give me a shout.I did see your reply, will have a think about that one but it has the wrong stock for what I'm after.

I might have to ask you for tips when I get mine and do the same to the stock. Just waiting for FAC to come back now.
Thanks mate ussrflag

With regard to the dimples 7.62 Saigas usually have them, .223 Saigas usually don't.To be honest i haven't seen a 7.62 Saiga in the UK that don't have them.I want to do an AKS-74 rep using a .223 Saiga but the lack of dimples is putting me off...........if anyones got a .223 with dimples let me know.

**** My Saiga doesnt have dimples... I feel cheated now I want dimples....

Ray......No dimples, plastic mag and aftermarket cocking knob!!!!!.......if you send it to me free of charge i will see that it is disposed of correctly! ussrflag

On a serious note 7.62x39 Saigas usually have dimpled receivers, its usually .223 ones that don't.I think every x39 example i've seen has been dimpled

Am waiting on a bullet guide kit arriving as I have 4 nice ex Soviet mags ussrflag waiting to be put into service. As for the aftermarket Cocking handle that easily come off as it is fits over the original to allow those of us with gorrila hands to operate the rifle. I leave it on purley to make my life easier :) Only way you could get mine off me is if by some miracle we were allowed Semi Auto rifles once more.

Same here, I would sooner shave my eyeballs than part with the Aks and the Dragunov.

At a base level a Saiga is a Kalashnikov as they both have the same basic action, select fire aside and Saigas are produced at Izhmash which is the home of the Kalashnikov (the company is now called Kalashnikov Concern as Izhmash and Izhmekh merged in August last Year).Saigas are built on the same production lines as the Military Kalshnikovs just with some stages missed out and some different parts fitted. The Saigas are built to the same dimensions as the Ak-100 series which in turn are based on AK-74 dimensions, meaning the bolt carrier and bolt are smaller than the equivalent parts from either an Akm or the original AK-47.To add further to the mix the Saiga12 and Vepr (made by Molot) shotguns use thicker 1.5mm RPK receivers whereas centrefire Saigas use the almost universal 1.0mm thick receivers.
I've never heard of fat bob so wouldn't have a clue about the lever release thing.

Well the locking mechanism arrived today and I fitted the stock:

Image

I've got to say it was more of a ballache than I expected, the receiver and trunnion steel is as hard as anything. I went through a titanium bit drilling the holes on the right hand side. I still have some work to do as the mechanism is VERY stiff and it's currently difficult to fold the stock. However I don't plan on shooting it with the stock folded so this isn't too much of an issue....I'll be shooting it next weekend and will let you know how I get on.
