1000yd calibre

hi all
as im still waiting to get my fac, i have been searching around the web looking for what rifle i would like for 1000yd shooting.
from what i have seen, i quite like the look of the remington 700 police and performance out of the box seems o.k. but also like the tikka t3 tactical and super varmint which seem to be very good. now i may well be wrong about this, hence me asking, but the majority of 1000yd shooters use .308. but are other calibres used that are better for 1000yds, like the .300winmag which has a shorter barrel life than the .308 but a flatter trajectory. is .300 winmag even allowed at bisley as i read the .338 is not.
any imput greatly appreciated and sorry if this is basic stuff, but it will help me make my decision.

+1 for 284 but 6.5x47 or 260 work well out to 1000,

to get a 308 out to 1000 reliably you need a longer barrel that most standard factory set ups,

If you are looking for a standard factory rifle like a Remmy 700, the 308Win. is a good all-rounder.

There are many more effective cartidges at 1000 yards - you only need to look what wins in F Class. 1000 yard Benchrest? Don't even go there - yet!

Jay, there are many calibers that are better at 1k than the .308. However, if this is your first rifle, if you eventually intend to reload but plan to buy ammo to start with and if you really want to develop your wind skills then .308 is a great place to start. Shoot the barrel out and move on as you gain experience.

As mentioned above, the .308 / 7.62x51 NATO is a good all rounder. If you want to try something different, the humble 6.5x55 Swedish is excellent too.

ok guys thanks for the imput. will have a think but will probably go for the tikka t3 super varmint in .308

The Tikka T3 is a great rifle with more after market parts becoming available for it.
As with the Remingtons the varmint models only come with a 26" barrel. That will not be long enough to keep the projectile supersonic at 1000 yards and If memory serves me, it drops just after 800 yards.
This may not be a issue for you depending on how big your target is or how accurate you want to be but for F class you eill not be competitive.
Sadly I do not have time now to explain but I recommend that you research the effects of going from supersonic to transonic on your projectile.

Thats why the Mexican has a 32" barrel!

I would strongly advise a Remington for this. Simply put, the humble Remington 700 can be gradually evolved into a competitive gun, if that is the route you choose.

More bits are being released for the Tikka, but the Remington can be turned into just about anything.

A Remington 700 Police may just shoot nicely anyway - I have had and seen 1/2 MOA R700s.

I shoot my Tikka T3 super v up to 1000 yds at Bisley. It's .308 and shoots lovely being my first rifle as well. Gets some good scores there when I've got my eye in!
