Ruger Gun Site Scout Rifle

I have a left handed one in the armoury. Once fitted with a decent muzzle brake (not so easy to get one in 1/2UNF) it is a pleasure to shoot.

Mine isn't threaded, maybe that'll be the next step. What sort of accuracy are you getting?

I have always lusted after a Steyr Scout however they do not seem to be getting any cheaper...

I looked at one a couple of years ago, very nice to shoulder, and as a hunting rifle the recoil was a non-issue, that one was very reasonable at £420 due to the previous owner leaving the mod on :cool2: the last 2" of the barrel was pitted, it shot alright however. I wasn't ready to drop the money on it as I was looking at another rifle, but it would have made a good field gun.

Steyr Scout - steer clear. The concept is a good-un but the rifle has too many faults. The stupid bipod legs will soon be swinging down of their own accord and at worst times. You'll soon have them taped or bound with a rubber band. The whippy wee barrel overheats and the group grows alarmingly after as little 2 rounds. They're also notoriously fussy. I'm a Steyr fan with 2 other rifles but I couldn't wait to get rid of the scout.

The laminate stock is solid and the action is OK but the accuracy isn't anything to shout about and the scope placement is just plain annoying. You are forever adjusting your head; hovering almost, trying to improve the scope picture.

I shot the Steyr and would agree, on to the GSR did he mount a Scout Scope?

Have you looked at the extensive data available on the scout rifle forum?

Seems that the better options are home made rifles, built on Mauser 96 or Lee Enfield actions; with XS scout scope bases. Makes for robust proven actions with clip loading and a lot of inbuilt accuracy potential. .

I take your point but I wanted a true left handed rifle and that doesn't really work with either the Mauser or Enfield. I've a No5 which I like but a 7.62 Enfield is less than ideal, the clip feed is so so (you need an adaptor) and in theory it's only proofed for 19 tonnes which limits factory loads to 144gr. I did experiment with a No4 Mk2 action, Armalon made a left hand bolt (forward and up), Pete did a good job but was limited by the Enfield technology enter the Ruger GSR. It is what it is and I quite like it but it's not perfect. I've replaced the trigger for a Tech Spec that the septics all rave about. I've mounted a 1.5-5x20 Leupold SPR and its alright but I need to tame the recoil a bit. I did wonder about a .260 Rem conversion....................................

I've not got a decent scope on it yet and have only played at getting familiar with it out to 100yds using a red dot. Once past 50yds the dot is a lot bigger than the group! (2MOA dot)

Next thing is to get a decent med-long eyerelief scope and see where we go from there.

Might I suggest you get a copy of Jeff Cooper's "The Art of the Rifle". An interesting perspective from a professional lifelong shooter.
