I've been looking at a parker hale tx1200 in .308 .. Synthetic stock, floating barrel, aperture sights .. Vgc £400
I'm considering buying it as my first full bore rifle ... Are they any good ? Opinions please ..

At £400 I would consider it overpriced, especially as it is not in its original stock. £200 would be the maximum that I would pay for it.
Are they any good? Well they are an outdated Target Rifle that was almost cutting edge when the majority of Target rifles were converted military actions. In the right hands it may be competitive but I have not seen one shot in serious competition for many years. They are best kept to the short/middle distances as the short barrel/sight base is a disadvantage at the longer distances of 900/1000yds. As a beginners rifle they are acceptable but it all depends on what you want to do with it. You will learn how to shoot with it but they are not as forgiving as more modern designs (which can be a good thing).

A pretty negative view of what is IMO a very good rifle!Steve E wrote:At £400 I would consider it overpriced, especially as it is not in its original stock. £200 would be the maximum that I would pay for it.

It's a generic Mauser action. Nice rifles that always go bang when required. Sounds like the only original parts of yours are the bolt, receiver and trigger mech. They're not hugely accurate compared to more modern offerings but a 1200TX with a decent barrel should shoot reasonably out to 600yds.
£400 is probably a bit much for one, unless it has a very low-use barrel or good quality sights on it. The Parker-Hale 5-series sights that came with them from the factory have a slight tendency for backlash.
