Re: Best ever battle rifle
I've used the Swiss StG57 and StG90, the 90 is by far a nicer gun, thought te 57 is very pleasant to shoot, the sights are good and it's boring accurate it's so dn heavy, great as a static defence gun, but moving around with it would be a nightmare. The 90 was light, handy, well balanced ad very accurate.
The only other semi-auto I've used of this ilk was the Steyr AUG, there are times that I forget I've ever shot one, it was really that boring

IMO and based on history and usage I would have to say fn fal l1a1 slr
Apparently it also did the other job that a battle rifle has to do very well and that is make a pretty good spear unfortunately
Ak47 m16 are technically assault rifles as we all know and all the older rifles were replaced for semis or greater capacity mags (m1 to m14)
Great in their time though
Plus it gave birth to the 'bitch' gun
Which is just the best name for a weapon of war ever devised
However things have moved on again and perhaps the l29a1 lmt or hk417 is now up there or are they dmr's

The Ak and M16 are technically assault rifles but the Ak and AR platform and their variants are some of the most prolific rifles used on todays battlefields.Warfare has moved on from the traditional battle rifle of old.
As for the best name for a weapon of war......I'd go with "Daisy Cutter"

BL 15" Mk1
Proven in many battles and the sort of rifle every soldier wants - one that can engage the enemy while they are a very long way out of range.
A bit heavy to carry though...

I greatly favor the M14 but the M16A2/A4 is a shooting machine and despite the naysayers, experience in Iraq and Afghanistan shows that BGs hit with M855 ball go down and stay down. The M4 is too short and light for me, I find it hard to hold steady for aimed fire but it is beyond handy in close confines. I find it interesting that the M14 is still in combat service when it was last produced in the early '60s!

What about the Mosin 91/30?, it was still in use as a sniper rifle by the Russians in Chechnya!!!

Tovarich,

I appreciate most great 91/30 succesfully defended glorious socialist motherland and protected its children for many years but lack of detachable magazine seriously limits most sacred fascist & religious fanatics slaying duty.
Ask yourself question ... When Kapitalist US fascist dogs come kicking your door down, you reach for work of obscure Belgium engineer or for the master piece of komrad Mikhail Timofeyevich ??
