I suspect Hitchens' views are less likely to be so forthrightly pro-gun these days. He is a contrarian, and back in 2003 we were at the peak of the New Labour Terror, with its vehemently anti-personal-responsibility outlook and legislation.

As a good Tory I can't see him repeating such forthright views now his party are in power. It would embarrass them, if nothing else.

He supported the pro gun side of the intelligence squared debate last year. and still said the same sort of things.

I suspect embarrassing the Tory party or its members wouldn't bother him as he has been very critical of the modern tory party over the lat few years. referring to David Cameron as "Mr Slippery" on question time.
