I took my Mod off today and besides the tiny amount of rust it would seem my rifle has a lack of a crown, so is this fine like it is or would it benefit from being done such as a target crown

It would do it no harm to get it crowned at some stage, this is the perennial issue with suppressors, they seem to destroy crowns quite quickly regardless of cleaning regimes.

Danny, the issue seems to be due to the small gap left between the crown and the suppressor when it is fitted, this gap may only be a couple of millimetres or less however the blast from the shot swirls into this area and leads to an increased build up of carbon and pitting when compared to a crown without a suppressor or muzzle brake fitted.

Additionally some people leave suppressors in place all of the time which leaves a moisture trap which accelerates corrosion. I have a 25-06 here right now that has a crown that looks like it has been gas cut and is very badly pitted. It has not had a huge round count through it however every single shot has been taken with a suppressor.

I am currently shooting an AI with a suppressor fitted and I am keeping a very close eye on the crown to see how it fares over time, one thing that never ceases to amaze me is the amount of condensation in the suppressor when I strip it after a day at the range and carbon build up with a can fitted is certainly greater than without.

NEVER leave a mod on the rifle when it is stored! I have seen several rifles now with the last few inches of the barrel badly pitted after mods have been left on, and heard various scare stories about how hard people have had to work to remove mods after they have been left on a rifle for a while sign01
