There are some who get a little media attention, especially recently. Namely Amber Hill and Peter Wilson, though good ambassadors to the sport they are notably clay shooters only and as far as I know neither have come out in support of other forms of shooting. There is Georgina Geike who shoots 25m pistol, she has some twitter presence but that is it, she goes complete ignored by the media.Thorney wrote:The problem that shooting has is that it has no positive role models, all the public see are negative ones so it's no surprise we are either misunderstood, maligned or downright repressed, IMO we need to promote shooting and create positive role models for the public to see. If we keep quiet the visible side to shooting is overwhelmingly negative, what do we think will happen?

Oh they exist for sure and more power to them but as you say they are either quite isolated for their style of shooting (a common issue amongst shooters I feel) but also I agree it needs media support for which we have none.dave_303 wrote:There are some who get a little media attention, especially recently. Why do we have to keep quiet about a lawful activity? It's bizarre and a uniquely British attitude.
Little wonder most people think shooting is abnormal and frightening.

I don't keep quiet about it. All of my work colleagues know that I shoot and actively ask about my shooting. My company has sponsored me in international competition and will be doing so in the near future. All of my friends at my local pub know that I shoot and are interested in what I do even if they have no intention of having a go.SevenSixTwo wrote:Why do we have to keep quiet about a lawful activity? I have never met anyone who thinks that shooting is abnormal or frightening, just something that they may or may not be interested in.
So why do people keep quiet about it?

I don't keep quiet.. I just don't tell anyone I think is dodgy.
If my next door neighbour popped round for a cup of sugar whilst I was cleaning my guns in my kitchen, I'd tell her to hang on one moment, cover up the guns then drag her upstairs for a good shagging.

Given that the re-arranged Police/F.E.O./C.T.U. visit was Friday - the 13th, no less!! - is he still with us, is he trying on a nice new set of orange overalls in somewhere known to make fine cigars, or has he been permanently re-routed by his inspector?

Any guesses??

Re: well im annoyed
I disagree. Being discrete about security matters does not mean hiding, being quiet or cowing to authority. I don't think anyone has advocated #1, rather it is tossed around as an accusation by some of the loud and proud advocates.walesdave wrote:Appears to be two schools of thought in this thread:
#1 - we have to hide and be quiet and not upset anyone in authority
#2 - be loud and proud and if authority challenges you, then challenge right back!

Re: well im annoyed
why not adopt simple measure-you can shoot, you can defend yourself/family/country...in theory,yes-but take a look at the news now!I never seen so many conflicts, some of them are in Europe now!and UK MOD plans are to go TA full scale-but where they are all this volunteers now?if they only started some compulsory .22RF training at the college level,maybe...I think is possible to paint a shooters world in short video and go "global"-terrestrial on all channels with positive image, sort of "think bike"?

Re: well im annoyed
I have helped to give over 300 people a shooting experience from unashamedly displaying the positive side to our sport & club using guest days & inviting people to have a go as probationary members & running events for our sponsoring company. Some have gone on to become strong shots; 2 at GB level others range from county to club to Scouts. All have enjoyed it & those that haven't come back have gone away as future & current voters saying it was a fun & positive experience.
You don't get that with a head below any parapet?
