308 recoil and muzzle brakes

Eyeballs don't like being pelted by hot gases full of chemical particulates. Much more care should be taken when they are used on ranges and in my opinion they should never be used next to anyone else or be so designed that gases are not aiming at anyone next door.

I think eye protection is just as important as ear protection when shooting on a range, lots of crap and brass flying around.

I tend to shoot with eye protection a lot more these days, something I would not have thought about even 5 years ago.

A friend of mine had (maybe still has) a couple of French Crapahute bull-pup Mauser-actioned stalking rifles in .243 and 7x57mm. The 7mm rifle had a flat-section six-hole brake on it with the holes angled backward. I was positioned next to him on the firing point of a BDS stalker's shoot - his first shot blew sand and gas into by face from very close range, at which point I made safe and abandoned the firing point, he subsequently fired each detail on his own.

I'm fitting a combined brake/suppressor (Third Eye Tactical Spartan III) on my forthcoming .300 WSM rifle, and it certainly will not be used brake-only in close proximity to anyone on any range, but the brake-only option is there should I wish to use it in the right environment.

I also think that if one is going to use a brake then some thought and consideration needs to be put into which type of brake to use.

One of our lads shoots from a wheelchair.....a hand brake then...... :shakeshout:

Muzzle brakes are banned on the main range I shoot at. Said range has a sound moderator ONLY (if possible) policy - non moderated rifles are ONLY fired from within modified foam lined water butts.

You can get some makes of muzzle brake that also act as the attaching point for moderators...though they tend to be not the cheapest things to buy

The Third Eye Tactical Spartan III can be had with a moderator and is remarkably reasonable at only £250 for most calibres, and a tad more for .338LM, but this is still considerably more than many Scandinavian/NZ/domestic-made mods, and it's a top quality piece of kit, I've just bought one with a Tac-brake for my .300 WSM project.

Oh dear....I am a hypocrite

I have this hankering to try CSR (Mid life exe soldier crisis s***....but laying on my guts is just getting a bit stale).

I know I can start out with my No4, but that really a properly built AR type is ultimately the way to go in .223.

So I find myself studying a black rifle (for which I said I would probably never have a use), in .223, with a muzzle brake....ouch

Ah stuff it, I will get a sex change, then I can change my mind as many times as I like :55:
