You'll need to be a little more specific. What species of animal did you have in mind?nearly there wrote:Hi just want to ask you folk your opinion on the best calibre for upto 800yd shootong.id like to shoot animals and paper with it.what make of rifle and calibre do you suggest.thanks

Re: best calibre
Being sensible about the OPs request I expect he is looking for opinions on a duel purpose rifle and calibre to cover both aspects of the sport , a basic calibre would be .308 , but the problem arises in the type of rifle the choice ranges from light weight sporting rifle for hunting , which would struggle for target use at 800 yds or a target rifle which would be on the heavy side to carry round for hunting .
Dedicated rifle , bullet / ammunition type and scope for each rifle makes life easier .

I think you'll need to help us out a bit here, and tell us just what exactly you are hoping to shoot, and where.

I'd save your money until the results are out next week
The S.N.P. WILL be going for a complete gun ban in Scotland, & unless you are employed as a gamekeeper or the like, then bye bye shooting.
At least there are a couple of good clubs near Carlisle that will be open for new members.
A few of us on the site can also give good advice on the better types of longbow to look for & what arrow heads are best...
