Guest days.

#1 Post by Alpha1 »

Our Club regularly holds guest days I don't normally take guests but one of the Guys I work with is keen to have a go. He has done some Clay pidgeon shooting and intends to keep it up. So I thought what the hell and invited him along. He will have to pay the clubs standard fee for a guest no issues there.
We have club guns but as he is my guest I want him to have a good day so I thought a Steyr SSG P1 .308. A 6.5x55 built on a TIKKA action with a shilen barrel.
A No4 Lee enfield with parker hale aperture well you just have to don't you.
Then the high light of the day a mas36 and a Winchester trapper in .357 magnum just for variety.
He is a good friend and Colleague and I thought great a good day out had by all. Then I did the maths a full day he is going to want to give it some.
So 100 .308 between us. 100 6.5x55 between us. 100 .303 between us. 100 mas between us. 50 .357 between us.

So 450 rounds even reloaded = £150. Gulp. I wont be doing this to often.

I took a friend from work, his son and his wife to a guest day recently and with all the gun safety chat, changing targets and learning each gun, we didn't get through anywhere near as much ammo as I thought. All apart from the .308's & .22's were home loads and they only got through £50 of ammo and they all look tired at the end of the day. 450 rounds sounds way too much, perhaps start him on .22 where he can shoot as much as he likes for next to nothing. We all started on .22.

I don't think he will be impressed with .22 on a full bore range a MOD full bore range. No I don't think that's going to cut it.

What distances? 100 yards with .22 is competitive IMO, there's nothing boring about it.

I don't think .22 will make 350 yards. But I will let you know how he gets on a Lantac raven in .22 is available if he wants to give it a try. Now there is a challenge.
I just hope he has a good day and I will do my best to make sure he does.

 I would say that you are going a bit over the top there Alpha, wars have been fought with less ammo than that.
Are you trying to put your mate off shooting for life. Why not concentrate on quality of shots rather than quantity. Also do you really want to shoot your barrels out.

I'll help him get through the ammo if he struggles Alpha, sounds like a great day!

450 rounds between 2 people across 5 calibres is a quiet days shooting in my book.

When I have a range day out to 600 I'll expect to shoot at least 500 rounds on my own.

Dave is just tight.

Mind you as all my full bore loads will be using cast boolits out to 600 yrds my costs will be less.

Cast makes a lot of sense however you look at it, it doesn't save you money but it does allow you to shoot more

I was out at 800/1000/1200 yesterday with a 6,5x47 and I shot 60 rounds, so 20 per detail. A good day out as far as I am concerned.
