Straight pull accuracy...
Oomans, given that an AR type action converted to straight pull doesn't have any parts reciprocating as the bullet travels down the barrel, are they more accurate than the baseline AR ? We prefer bolt action rifles, but the thought just ocurred to us that a straight pull conversion is potentially just as accurate.
If so, what might be better for general usage out to 600 mards - a Dragunov or an AR15 type - included in which we consider Grendels, Beowulfs and such exotica

Re: Straight pull accuracy...
I had a straight pull AR and it was very accurate. . But like any rifle it depends on the barrel, ammo and nut behind the butt.

For the UK it's a bit of a niche cartridge - I'd still give one room in the cabinet, if I could afford the cartridge and the rifle...sigh!meles meles wrote:Hmmm, and anybody here git any experience of say, an AR15 in .50 Beowulf ?
But back to your original question - Gunmart/Shooting Sports did review about a year or so ago on the AR/Beowulf combo.

Re: Straight pull accuracy...
I don't see why a straight pull version of the same rifle would be anymore accurate than a gas operating alternative, personally I'd say they're identical in terms of MOA. The bolt doesn't lock in a different manner and the headspace and chamber are still the same... That said, now I've worked out what was wrong with the accuracy of my M14 EBR, it's shooting .75 moa without too much effort.

Re: Straight pull accuracy...
In a gas operated version, the bolt will begin to unlock and reciprocate afore the bullet has left the barrel, thus the potential accuracy diminishes...

Re: Straight pull accuracy...
OK, but surely the bullet has left the barrel at the point the bolt fully unlocks and the barrel would return to atmospheric pressure, wouldn't you think?

Re: Straight pull accuracy...
Only if it's moving backwards, if it's rotating would it really affect accuracy? Watch this video for 10 seconds, there's 2 clips from LanTac's video and the bolt doesn't appear to move backwards until well after the bullet has left the barrel.
