Re: Pistols or Hunting ?
Sorry Bradaz11, you have me confused. Excuse my ignorance but I thought section 7 were rare pre-WWI firearms in obsolete calibers & that the owner was not supposed to shoot them ??

Pre-WW1 Section 7 are stored at home as part of a collection, are of obsolete caliber & the owner is to have no live ammunition for it (7.1)froggy wrote:Sorry Bradaz11, you have me confused. The OTHER Section 7 are stored at a club, have to be of some "historical interest" (initially this was set at a 1945 cut-off date, but that has changed in the time since) and ARE stored at the designated club for use under restricted circumstances (7.3)

Thanks Suomi-Ratty ,
What constitutes the historical interest ? Does that mean one can own & shoot a pre-WW1 dated 1911 or a C96 ? What are the restricted circumstances ? when a target suddenly appears ?

Personally if I had to keep my firearms at a club i would sell them. It would be like owning a sports car but it must be kept at a secure garage, and you were only allowed access to it under supervision. I don't see why handguns would be treated any differently than any other firearm.

Re: Pistols or Hunting ?
I think virtually any pistol can qualify as theres a Section 7 club near me (there are only a handful in the country) that has Glocks, Beretta 92f and other relatively modern guns. I'm lead to believe you have to virtually (or literally) do a presentation to the police as to why the specific gun you're wanting should be considered for section 7.3 status. You also can't use them for competition purposes (or at least practical pistol type comps).froggy wrote:Thanks Suomi-Ratty ,

Lots of paperwork/hoop jumping for limited use is what puts people off (myself included). If i'd owned my own pistols before the ban and this was a way of keeping them it might have/be more attractive.

From my understanding of it, you apply for a specific pistol, that is to say give the serial number and all. It isn't a case of saying you want a historically significant type of pistol and buy one when it comes along, you find one with historic significance then ask the police if you are allowed to buy that specific pistol.

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
