Gov. Tom Wolf has declared a state of emergency in Pennsylvania, joining Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal issues a state of emergency for 21 counties.

Communities on the East Coast braced Thursday for what could be the winter's biggest storm yet.

About 75 million people are in the storm's path, with nearly 30 million under blizzard watches or warnings. Severe weather, including tornadoes, could hit Gulf states, and some of the country's most populous cities could see blizzard-like conditions.

There could be winds as strong as 60 mph, coastal storm surges and flooding on top of whatever precipitation will fall. And it could be a lot.

"It's not out of the question that some localized areas receive over 2 feet of fresh snow," CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said.

Washington could see the most. Starting Friday afternoon and into Saturday night, up to 30 inches could fall in the nation's capital.

What we know

There will be a powerful storm.

The storm will take shape across the southeastern states on Thursday night, tracking into the Mid-Atlantic on Friday. Blizzard watches and winter storm watches are already in effect for the Washington area in advance of the onset of heavy snow on Friday evening.

The snow will be extremely heavy in some areas.

In some places in the Mid-Atlantic, the snow is likely to exceed the rate of 1 inch per hour, and approach 2 to 4 inches per hour at times. Thundersnow — any winter storm enthusiast's dream occurrence — is also a possibility.

This storm is not likely to fizzle out or disappoint snow lovers in the Washington to Baltimore corridor, but...


People should keep their expectations in check. It is possible this will be a top three snowstorm for Washington, but that is not guaranteed. Many factors could come into play and somewhat hold down accumulations. Still, at least 1 to 2 feet of snow look very likely in the Washington area, with the potential for even more.

For historical perspective, consider that Washington has not had a 20-inch or greater snowstorm in nearly 100 years. The largest snowstorm on record for the city was in 1922, when 28 inches fell.

Most of the recent blizzards in the city, including the infamous "Snowmageddon" event of 2010, amounted to about a foot-and-a-half of snow

(CNN) - The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed Nago on the tropical island of Okinawa saw snow for the first time in recorded history, while the island of Amami Ohshima had its first snowfall in 115 years.









Many other cities throughout western and northern Japan experienced historic snowfalls, including in Nagasaki. The city was blanketed in about 7 inches despite snow being a rarity there.

At least three people died on Sunday. In Niigata city, a 63-year-old man was washed away while trying to shovel off snow blocking a river. His wife was also discovered dead after trying to rescue him. Another 80-year-old man was run over by a snow shovel car.

More than 60 flights were canceled due to heavy snow, according to transport authorities.

Record low temperatures have wreaked havoc in several Asian countries, with 85 people reported dead in Taiwan and tens of thousands stranded at airports because of the unprecedented cold snap.

In South Korea, more than 90,000 saw their flights canceled over the weekend due to bad weather. More than 10,000 travelers faced severe delays at Kunming Airport in southwestern China.

Taiwan authorities advised people to stay indoors after the deaths, and temperatures in Hong Kong, China, forced kindergartens and primary schools to shut Monday.

China renewed an orange alert, its second most serious weather warning. Major highways were blocked by snow and sleet as peak travel season for the Lunar New Year vacation kicked off.
