So would I be right in assuming that the EU firearms directive will be dead in the water now? Or at least won't touch us?

Not at all, nows the time to lobby our own mp's and ensure that any eu legislation on firearms is not adopted in the period running up to the final ties with the EU being severed.

Hopefully the next leader of the UK will not bow to threats and pressure from the EU to do anything that is not in our interests. Easier said than done, I know, but we should start to cut ourselves loose NOW, and not wait until the end of the two year exit period before we start making changes.

Just because we won't be in the EU doesn't mean we will automatically not follow their directives. If the UK government want to adopt them and no-one argues against it, then there's no stopping them.

As an aside, I work in the medical industry of which part of my job includes control and release of human tissue products. I had a meeting a couple of months ago with other European sites within the company discussing a new EU directive and I asked whether this would affect the UK given the EU referendum. The answer was yes, we needed to align to it whether we were in the EU or not. I suspect that we would always align with the higher quality standards/regulations. Might be different for the shooting industry, but I wanted to include my pennies worth.

It remains to be seen what real effect this will have upon us as shooters. Hopefully the British Government sees sense and does not try and ban "Black, Military" firearms or all Semi-autos. Lets hope they don't take any notice of Mr "I represent British Shooters, but hate "Black Guns" Yardley

The other group who it seems will be affected are the re-enactor / deact crowd who wish to go to mainland Europe to play Soldiers....

I think BREXIT sends a clear message to the government, we don't like the direction the EU is heading. Whilst we should lobby our MP's, I suspect further EU directives will have less impetus now.
