Golden Opportunity???????? (Maybe)

#1 Post by Andy632 »

Rumour abounds that the Army base at Fort George (Highlands) is on the chop list. If it does close, surely this would be a Golden Opportunity for our National Shooting Organisations to take over the Ranges from Landmark.????????
Pistol, 600 yard gallery & 400 yard ETR.

If only, but probably too much like common sense.

The NRA have asked its members for ranges like this to be brought to thier attention with an eye to taking over the facilities.

It's a lovely idea, but I suspect that it would be too much of a temptation for the developers to miss out on.

Those of us who have shot at Fort George will know it's a superb facility, especially the ETR range. The range complex combined with its spectacular location (Fort George, beaches, Dolphin watching etc.) could be a real winner.

With Castle Stuart a mile or two away (just the other side of Inverness airport) I somehow doubt it.

Another problem is the danger area - being a typical links-type range shooting can be curtailed for passing vessels - cargo ships, fishing vessels, Dolphin-watch tour boats, and in the summer lots of pleasure craft.

With Scottish independence looming would it make sense for our NGBs to expend their budgets trying to outbid the developers?

It can also be a rather windy location, as a newly minted private I shot a respectable APWT score there, but the flags were indicating a constant strong wind.

Would its location pose a problem getting enough bodies there to make it viable?

At least it is not as remote as Bisley and far more pleasant drive to get there.
