Temporary Permit question

#1 Post by Racalman »

In June I bought a new rifle and sent off the notification (signed for as received by TVP).

I then sent off my FAC renewal, which is due in November.

TVP have now sent me a six month temporary permit to run from my expiry date in November - so far, so good.

However, the permit does not list my new rifle ...

The accompanying letter includes this advice:

"You do not need to take any action if weapons held on your current shot gun / firearm certificate differ from those on your temporary permit. The discrepancy will be dealt with during the renewal process".

(Yes, they said weapons ...) aaarggh

So, if my FAC is not renewed by the due date will I be in illegal possession of my new rifle? Anyone else in this position?

You're lucky in one sense, I was still waiting for my temp permit on the day my FAC expired.

If you're a member of BASC I'd give them a ring and ask their advice on Monday, their firearms team will be able to give you an exact answer.

In my opinon (which counts for nothing) I'd suggest that whilst you've done everything you can, you are in possession of a section 1 firearm without proof of authority to possess or reasonable excuse etc etc...

Are you that confident that a Police authority that has to issue temporary permits because they can't turn renewels around in time couldn't misplace your notification?

At least write back to them to get abit of a paper trail that you can control going!

Not BASC, but NRA. I think you're right though, I should check with the FLD that they haven't misplaced my notification (I have a copy of course). I might email them rather than write so they don't lose that as well!

It'so big deal and hardly worth getting excited about, it just seems to me that they simply missed the firearm that had been acquired since the last certificate was issued so just return the certificate to them and ask them to amend it.

I have to say though that it seems a bit odd that they should issue a temporary certificate so far in advance of the renewal date. You didn't by any chance send them your actual existing certificate which is still valid up until November and not a photo copy did you. The force that I come under are quite happy for the FAC holder to retain their existing certificate up until the new one is issued or a temporary permit is issued. They used to be one of the worst forces in the country for delays but have improved their game no end and provided the shooter does his/her bit and supplies the necessary information they seem to be issuing renewed certificates very close to if not slightly before the actual renewal date.

Well a few weeks after buying my new rifle I sold another one and that hasn't appeared on the permit so they didn't miss that one.

They asked me to renew six months in advance due to their backlog, and I sent them a photocopy of my FAC with the new rifle details entered in the firearms table.

That is quite some backlog, GMP only asked for 3 months in advance.

I had a similar situation with Kent, they missed a rifle out on my temp permit.
I phoned and spoke to a member of the team and after a quick consultation with her manager they just agreed to renew my certificate there and then and deal with the couple of additions at a later date, I collected my renewal the next day and the additions were added a month later after a quick call from my FEO.
You couldn't make it up

"It'so big deal and hardly worth getting excited about....."

Beg to differ (and not wanting to start a barney :good: ) but Racalman has a gun in his cabinet and no paperwork to show he has authority to posses it. I wonder what would happen if Racalman went out-of-area to shoot and a non-TVP bobby ran a NFLIMs check.....at the least he would end up in a custody suite answering some questions which no one would believe until TVP had confirmed his 'but TVP said it would be ok' answers.
