The corriolis effect ........
Does it actually exist?
And if it does how does one allow for it on those super long shots?

It does indeed exist! It has a greater impact on artillery due to the duration the shell is in the air. The effects are different based on which direction you're firing in.

Re: The corriolis effect ........
Don't forget spin drift comes in to effect also at longer ranges

Yes, interesting video but...TattooedGun wrote:I found this interesting.
If you are shooting east or west you can quite easily, acording to the video, accomodate the difference but what happens when you are shooting say 6 degrees past NNW how would you calculate the drop? Or am I missing something obvious here?

Spin drift also as you say Duey come in to the long shot equation.
It would be interesting to see if there is a formula to take all this into consideration

Re: The corriolis effect ........
There probably is an equation but it would depend on where you are latitudally on the earths surface to compensate for how much the earth moves underneath you (earth spins faster at the equator than at the poles), you'd also have to take into account altitude as something further away from the centre of the earth is also moving faster. So the equation would be quite complex. Then you would need to make account for the direction of which you are shooting, if you're shooting north east or south west etc by what degree of angle are you shooting.Gazza wrote:Yes, interesting video but...TattooedGun wrote:I found this interesting.

The coriolis effect is a right kick in the bollox for the flat earthers too come to think of it
This has got very brain taxing now and I've come to the conclusion that with a professional marksman there must be a lot of "guesswork" for the super long shots or they have a formula and cheat sheets worked out for all situations.
