Re: US NRA Moves Championships from Camp Perry
Wonder what the reason for that was? Does the new site have better facilities? More shooting lanes?

Ah.....to have a national venue change in the UK!
Cheaper real estate up in the Midlands than M25/Home Counties. Bisley estate must be worth gazillions, if not more.
Imagine the positive benefit to the NRA bank balance! Cheaper rental/housing for NRA staff, less traffic congestion, etc.

Don't the NRA have some sort of lease with the MoD? That land is indeed worth a huge amount of money, you could build a medium sized town on it. Unless there is some other reason to preserve it, such as the lesser spotted warbling toadbat, my guess is that at some point it will be turned into housing.saddler wrote:Ah.....to have a national venue change in the UK!

Careful now/that sort of thing
Re: US NRA Moves Championships from Camp Perry
Most of the land is the danger area, its full of ordinance & stuff - in ww2 it was a bomb drop zone for unspent munitions from bombers flying in to local air bases. only last month a mortar was found just behind the FP on Stickledown. Some if it is SSI & its got a lot of heavy metal laying about. Its got wild life the rest of Surrey could only dream of inc adders & the red deer etc. you would also have to close Pirbright camp & their ranges too as they own the danger area so the chances of everything closing tad low, the chances of permission to clear it & then build on in your grand kids lifetime nil. So value is academic.shugie wrote:Don't the NRA have some sort of lease with the MoD? That land is indeed worth a huge amount of money, you could build a medium sized town on it. I believe MoD have a right to buy the actual NRA camp for some stupid sum £1? in the event of NRA trying to sell it or a bank closing a loan against it.
So moving Bisley out of Surrey - dream on................
Quality control of Scottish Ethanol. & RDX/HMX
& my fav chemical is :-) 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine.......... used to kill frogs.... but widely consumed & in vast quantities by the French? Eh?

Re: US NRA Moves Championships from Camp Perry
I don't think Bisley will ever move - it will just continue becoming less and less relevant. The national tiny bullet organisation will be out of there and into the wilds of Yorkshire at some point in the future, and I foresee more privately owned ranges coming to the fore. National Diggle Rifle Association? Why nothitchphil wrote:So moving Bisley out of Surrey - dream on................

Re: US NRA Moves Championships from Camp Perry
If the Army pull out of Pirbright then Bisley will be massively reduced for the reasons given above. Not likely you might think? Given they have just decided to sell Chilwell (the largest reservists mobilisation centre in the country) then anything could happen!
Re: US NRA Moves Championships from Camp Perry
I certainly wouldn't bet on Bisley as is, staying as is, in perpetuity.....especially with an ever shrinking MOD land portfolio and pressure in the south east for housing land, especially in proximity to the motorway corridors.
Re: US NRA Moves Championships from Camp Perry
Impossible to move BISLEY as its a town.hitchphil wrote:Most of the land is the danger area, its full of ordinance & stuff - in ww2 it was a bomb drop zone for unspent munitions from bombers flying in to local air bases. only last month a mortar was found just behind the FP on Stickledown. UXB can be cleared IF the sums work out.....and how much of ye olde Berlin was bombed flat & still remains unbuilt wasteland?
Never thought as many RAF bases as I grew up knowing would no longer exist....either as RAF sites or still under MoD remit.
Such a site (or similar army camp) would make for a great new National Shooting Venue....one such base in the Perth area decided the 500m? range would make cracking allotments....the dumb bastages!!
