US Military moving to hollowpoint /expanding ammo?

#1 Post by Chuck »

Interesting wee article: seems the US is not so bound by the Hague Convention - wonder how that will work for other countries.?

Seems to me this would result in additional stockpiling of both FMJ and expanding ammo if the US was to stay within the rules of war...???

Sounds entirely sensible to me. FMJ's have that nasty habit of ricocheting.

Firing at close quarters in built up areas with 5.56 and concrete around is not a great combination.

Even a sierra match king would be better, but I'm not so naive to think that they would find the budget for that type of ammo for general use.

The future is unfortunately non lead I suspect.

The Mk.262 round is based on OTM bullets.

Been ruled legal for some time now.

Why? Just means they have an additional source of ammunition available should they be fighting countries/groups not covered by the Hague convention.

In any case plenty of countries appear to not to have signed up to Article IV of the convention https://verdragenbank.overheid.nl/en/Ve ... ils/002423 so the USA is not alone in that regard.
Australia, for example, seems to have only signed Article I and only then in 1960 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_p ... te-state-1) but our training emphasised what we could and couldn't do under our Laws of Armed Conflict - basically the Geneva Convention (and Protocols) and the Hague conventions.

Also, the Hague convention does not apply to Police or Military engaged in policing operations !

Hence Israeli snipers using expanding ammo - apparently.........

Wasn't there also a requirement for a declaration of war and the enemy to have uniforms which kinda makes it's relevance in engagement with the modern Jihadi kinda moot or am I missing something?

Well it would give the military justification for wanting even MORE money... after all they never know what county they'll invade next.

I doubt the US military care about riccochets somehow.

I think I rread somewhere that US snipers were using Matchking HPBT ammo that - although NOT a HP by definition - did tend to expand....
