Re: FAC variation advice.

My original grant in Bedfordshire was for 250 of each centre fire rifle which I very quickly increased and I am now into 4 figures for the majority of my rifles. What does seem to be important is the safe storage of the ammunition and they took a lot of interest in how we stored our ammunition.

Yes, I had my quantities reduced at my last renewal because the ammo safe wasn't big enough to hold them all.

All OK now though with more storage.

The quantities are maximum limits, not targets surely? I can't store all that I'm allowed but I'd never want to but one month I might max out my .308 and the next month it'd be the .303.
And anyhow, security is my responsibility, not the Polices :-)

I think you're right Rockhopper but as I reload most of my ammo it wasn't worth an argument at the time.

I was also told in no uncertain terms that it was necessary to reduce holdings as .308 was a "very attractive round for criminals" lol

Shropshire which comes under West Mercia police are pretty good in turnaround times...my last variation for an Accuracy International in 7.62 came through in a week....I have heard of months in other areas....ammunition I think is at the descresion of the firearms officer in your area...there are guide lines for sure but they are not hard and fast by any means...standard amount with no issues here are 550 to hold in centre fire.....1000 in rimfire...no point in asking to double up on a caliber as you can only fire one gun at a time.....

I was told in no uncertain terms if it COULD buy it I had to have somewhere to put it. In fairness ammo safes are fairly cheap and I now have capacity for way more than I can own.

FEO's have a bit of a history of making up their own rules :-)

Absolutely, but I don't think there's anything in law or the guidance that gives a ruling/opinion either way so it was a choice of going to B&Q for a £50 ammo safe or having a chew on getting my grant/going to court to get a decision. Oddly enough I went with the latter!
