Evening peeps,

I, obviously wrongly, assumed that as expanding ammo had been moved back to section 1 ( unrestricted ) that it would be ok to shoot at the range. Ive now been told by a friend who has the latest copy of Shooting Sports that there is an article in the mag that seems to indicate that expanding ammo can only be possessed by those who have "vermin/ground game etc... as a condition on their license.

Anybody else heard about this ? 'coz being a bit simple, I'm a bit confused by the logic ( I thought that the NRA submission to the consultation contained the opinion that expanding posed less of a ricochet hazard and that they (Bisley ) would not have a problem ion its use for target shooting ).

If I'm having a senior moment, then by all means feel free to point and laugh, but........

I am sure that mag he mentioned was Shooting Sports.
Hopefully I will be seeing my "Mate" tomorrow and will read the article and/or obtain some sort of web link,
I've looked on the Government website and all I can find is "substitute this para for that para " ( about as clear as porridge !)

I've read the same article in Shooting Sports and it is wrong.
Without having to type a huge amount of text, the author looked at the list of exemptions for needing Sec.5 authority for expanding ammunition (which are all about use on animals) but failed to take account of the fact that expanding rifle ammunition is no longer Sec.5 (and therefore does not need exemptions) and that the exemptions will only be relevant to pistol ammunition.

So it is still true that if you have a pistol that uses a round that there are no rifles for, you can not use that pistol for target shooting with expanding ammunition

And the pistol ammo is rounds only used in pistols. So if a rifle takes 9mm you can have expanding ammunition on section 1 , SGC 9mm & DE lisle fall into this.
For 44mag shooters JSP's and HP are now sect 1 in fact Krank only list 1 type as licensed "30cal Sierra Bullets (.308) 85gr RN pkt100"
Every other Sierra bullet is non licenced.

All the solid slug I've ever seen for sale in the UK was Section 1 and not designed to expand. Expanding slugs are usually the preserve of places like the US were they are used for self-defence and for people who are daft enough to go into grizzly bears back yards.

However if you can lay your hands on some slug which is designed to expand it would indeed be section 1.

OP - Please note, that while expanding rilfe ammo is indeed back to being S1, your club may still not allow it for target shooting because of the additional damage it can do (i'm more thinking indoor clubs here)

I have just read a similar article in 'Gun Mart' which seems to go along with the OP's reading of 'Shooting Sports'.

In the Gun Mart article they had an extract from the legislation which, to my mind anyway, clearly reads that expanding ammo is no longer classed as S5 with no caveats or exemptions (other than for the handful of pistol specific cartridges/calibres). Beneath that though there's an extract from some 'guidance' presumably for licensing departments which states that expanding ammo is indeed still S5 for target shooting?! But it reads exactly the same as the guidance before the 'change' so I don't know if some wires have been crossed or what.....

Have any of the RFD's on here had any additional guidance on selling COMPLETE expanding rounds? i.e. not just the bullets?

How on earth can they police that when you can buy expanding bullets freely online now so can be reloaded at will for whatever purpose...

I've not attempted to buy any expanding ammo but I need to buy some primers at the weekend so will be asking when in there

The statute is pretty clear ! The home office has stated that all expanding ammo is section one except ammunition that can only be used in a pistol and they have small list of those ammo which are still section 5, all other pistol ammo such as 9mm 357 etc are section one as they are duel use ie they can shot through a pistol or a rifle
