To be honest, I can understand them getting a little twitchy about someone getting 7 in a short space of time.

Good reason has been satisfied. He's currently using all club firearms and has been since he joined the club (apart from LBR + LBP of course). His financial situation is immaterial.

So are they saying he's safe with 3 guns but not with 7? What difference do the number of firearms make?

To participate in all club activities he requires a predetermined number of firearms.

Is the applicant expected to be a spectator during those activities for which he is not duly equipped?

And they'll consider a variation a few months down the line at their convenience and according to their timescale!

Their course of action and the reasons for making such a decision must be documented and open for potential review.

It's unlawful, indefensible and discriminatory and he won't be mugged off.

"Reasonable"... there's absolutely nothing sound or logical contained within the cretinous communication of the FEO.

The statement above serves as an example of why shooting in this country has gone to wrack and ruin over the past twenty years. Officialdom's behaviour needs to be challenged at every opportunity.

At our club we usually advise new members to ask for 5 guns on the first application. 1 a year for a 5 year cert.
This is usually accepted by Lancashire

I think the "3 guns to start with" is fairly standard practise.. or it is here in Cambs...

Back in the late 80's when i first got my FAC for pistols, I was advised that asking for too many straight off would be frowned upon, so i went with 3 (.22, .38 and 9mm) and that was granted with no problems.

Even early last year when my Son got his FAC, he was advised to ask for 3.

This is the problem of the pot-luck with whoever you get to deal with your application. The system is just so inconsistant.

Myself and 3 others in my club, all within the Met area that have made FAC apps within the past 2 years or so have had nothing but good dealings with the Met Firearms team (the 3 of us had 3 different FEO's as well)

I also personally know the person that is the subject of this story related by the OP, having heard this saga 'straight from the horses mouth so-to-speak' and in more detail last Sunday....

The above is exactly the situation that HO Guidelines are meant to standardise...

It is all about risk management and proof of safety... Along the same lines as you will probably not get an open certificate on first grant... Nor are you likely to have a Deer management aspect to an FAC without first either completing a DSC or undergoing a mentoring period / condition.

That said, guidelines are just that - if you can show good cause then the pendulum may shift in ones favour.

Before you complain too much - work out if you're actually going to buy the 7 or more you're asking for (within 12 months)

So many newbs ask for loads, then realise they'll need to spend thousands to buy everything they want straight away. 5 years later, half the slots are unfilled...

If you kick off then don't fill your FAC up, you'll look rather silly.
