I think its scary the amount of shooters who have no knowledge of this or take the 'i dont shoot it i dont care' approach .
I sadly think its a done deal (but wont give up the fight) as the talk of making things sec5 removes the cost of compensation ,but it also makes a mockery of it all ......

This doesn't suprise me. I never seem to get through to the firearms department either. Although they did call me back once!

Sounds like our best approach is to make it appear too expensive. Governments don't like to spend money.

The impact assessment has certainly grossly underestimated the potential cost of prohibition.

They will just grandfather them in like they did with Brococks and De-acts if it will cost too much to compensate....

well if they dont take them away but change the clasification then surely they dont have to .I was thinking along the Brocock lines .

Semi auto full bore rifles and handguns were actually just reclassified to s5 with some notable exemptions. Compensation was paid as a result of both ammendmends to the Act.

Brocock were “grandfathered” to the original owner if certification was obtained. That is not what is proposed by the explanatory documents that accompany the consultation. Likewise, the paying of compensation is specifically noted and estimates of costings is also outlined.

Any “ban” brought about will see compensation paid. That said, the compensation will never make up for what is taken, that I’ll attest to!

SimG - thank you for your thoughts... However I would add that every time I look at my Compensation Pack (which I have kept as a momento) then I am reminded of the injustice of how the shooting community was treated by those elected on our behalf. One of the Law Lords at the time wrote a very good article in a broadsheet entitled "Let them keep their guns" or along those lines - I remember reading it with acute interest whilst sat in the Officers Mess at Kineton on my EOD course, wondering just what I could do further to retain my later "surrendered" items.

Never got inside the officers mess unless to steal the Daily Mail that hadn’t been delivered to the Sgts mess. And never got the chance to sit around reading the paper as usually running around trying to drag the platoon out of the mire that some Rupert has just dropped us in!

So if you went through the media circus and witch hunt that occurred, you’ll understand why I took exception to the suggestion that “we” didn’t do enough in ‘96/‘97...

So to summarize..

Our politicians don't care as there are so few of us they wont lose votes..

Our hobby representatives dont care as they will get our pounds regardless so we can have access to bisley/give us insurance/don't represent shooters that own said firearms..

Our peers, largely, dont care as it doesn't affect them..

I am gobsmacked we are already discussing the best case scenario, that some people get compensation as there firearms are taken for no reason.

We are screwed.. I hope that my time is done on this planet before they come for my shoe laces as I am unlikely to be enjoying shooting in my retirement.

Well there you have it, virtually anything 'high-powered' or centre-fire that can fire rapidly is on the table. Are they even aware that a .50BMG gun can be made to produce less than 10,000ft/lb simply by altering the length of its barrel?!

Time to get writing (again!) peeps!

So what will happen to the gunsmiths who make a lot of money out of these firearms? Will they look to be compensated for lost income / opportunity?

Did that happen with the pistol ban?

I shall email my MP again & demand to hear his views on the matter & will make it clear the government will lose votes over this.
