Scrapping an integrally modderated barrel.

#1 Post by CDM5 »

I have a GSG5 .22LR rifle, it's not at all reliable even after various attempts at fixing so looking to scrap it.

It's barrel has a permanently attached (pinned and welded) SAK sound moderator.

If I or an RFD were to cut the cut the chamber off (in half first), would it then be a rifled barrel blank that can be held off ticket?

It's over 30cm in length so may be able to use it in a future project.

Just looking to confirm my thoughts.

To be honest I don't really understand why you would bother trying to save the barrel off a GSG rifle, hardly seems worth it for the hassle and lack of value. If you need another .22 barrel I am sure there are other cheap ways of getting one.

Wait till the next amnesty and hand it into the plod, then its their problem.

As for keeping a rifled blank, not sure. Is it technically a pressure bearing part or not? Lacking a chamber I would say no.

There will be gun fettlers here who know.

Even with the chamber cut off it still becomes a moderator that has been used on a firearm.

I don't think it's worth the trouble.

Definitely not worth it then, didn't notice you mentioned it had a permanently attached moderator.

Considering you can buy a SAK RF moderator for £35 or less why bother?

A rifle barrel without a chamber is just a tube and as such can be legally held without a care in the world in any length. Easiest way to scrap the chamber is just stuff an 8mm drill in for an inch or so. If I want to section a chamber I chop the barrel at say 100,0mm and yes I know it is now in theory S5 I then pop the section into the lathe and face the cut end off so it looks nice, then either into the band saw and remove the excess if possible before finishing in the Mill. I did discuss the legality of this with my firearms department and they really did not care as long as it ultimately becomes incapable of chambering a loaded round in a timely manner.

In your particular case the sound moderator will be rendered scarp by the process and is best chopped in half and thrown in the bin. I periodically advise my Firearms department of items that have been destroyed including Sound Mods, shotguns and rifles, not barrels that have been removed.

If you really wanted to keep it, I would have thought getting a .22lr sound moderator slot on your FAC and chopping the chamber as described would be the easiest way.

Why not just sell the whole thing rather than scrap it? I'm sure you'd get a few quid even if advertised as a 'non-runner'.....
p.s. first dibs if it appears in the For Sale section :good:
