Re: New laws coming?
In 1996 after Dunblane and before the ban I went about buying, loading for and shooting all the pistols I had not yet owned but wanted to. A ban or some restrictions were looking very likely and I wanted to fulfil my pistol owning ambitions before it was too late. I have never regretted doing that, even though they were all taken off me in one way or another, in the the gun owning world he who tarries is lost.

..... not sure if they will be paying out for ammunition this time, but I do recall people loading up rounds filled with all sorts of powder "substitutes" at the time of the handgun banAirbrush wrote: Keep shooting it as much as you can until you can't.

I have received this via Darren Bean which is helpful evidence in supporting the MARs argument when making your submissions to MPs.

Only up to 2 rounds per second.... No doubt that is still too dammed fast to be accepted by our Government.

Didn't even bother with powder... just a primer and a bullet...HH1 wrote:..... not sure if they will be paying out for ammunition this time, but I do recall people loading up rounds filled with all sorts of powder "substitutes" at the time of the handgun banAirbrush wrote: Keep shooting it as much as you can until you can't.

Re: New laws coming?
Whilst I appreciate the sentiment and will do my bit in writing to my local MP I'm not sure it's a good idea to pander to the fantasy that .50 cal rifles are so especially dangerous that the following measures be implemented.
A. A requirement for the bolt to be stored separately from the receiver in a separate safe.
B. That the residential premises in which a .50 or over 10,000 ft/lb rifle is stored has a monitored alarm system.
C. When the firearm is being transported that the bolt remains, as far as is practicable, with the individual at all times, and separated from the rifle.
D. When on the range, if the owner of the rifle leaves the firing line, that the bolt is removed and remains on his person or is secured within his vehicle.
E. Range booking dates and locations will no longer be publicised on the website, these will be in a secure area for verified members only.
A through to C
Not only does this play into their BS that there is a serious risk (there isn't) but it gives the impression that we acknowledge that risk and could also spectacularly backfire - becoming an expensive requirement for all firearms all the way down to BB guns. If we give them an inch they'll take a mile. We surely know this by now?
Like chess we need to not only address the current threat but foresee several moves beyond.
D
I would hope that when the owner leaves the firing line the rifle is never out of his sight or reach. We should not be suggesting otherwise.
E
I would submit the better strategy would be to do this now and highlight the fact that it's already been implemented.
It's the only bone I would toss these mangy curs.

Oddly I practice A through E even with rimfire.

Re: New laws coming?
I’m not sure about that letter about the MARS at all, I ‘know’ people who can get that sort of RoF out of a lever action rifle and pump action shotgun let alone one of these. Coming at them with something that is relatively easy to disprove undermines anything else that’s in the same letter. Also telling them that you can get a ‘high’ RoF out of a bolt gun or straight pull isn’t going to make them think “oh well no point touching the MARS/lever-release guns” it’s going to make them think “bloody hell we must do something about all the other rifles as well!” aaarggh
