From the article....
"A property developer with a fascination for weapons was yesterday (Tuesday) jailed for 46 months.
Douglas Urquhart (45) from Loanhead confessed to police who turned up at his home on an unrelated matter that he owned firearms.
However, a check revealed that he had no firearms certificate for four air rifles.
Urquhart also ordered four front venting firearms by post. These weapons are banned in the UK."

I actually believe this is an avenue worth exploring. The fact is people that want to take drugs WILL. And people that want to sell drugs to them WILL do so. The war on drugs clearly isn't working because they're relatively easy to find, our prisons are full of drug related offenders, and our papers are full of articles relating to 'country lines' and turf wars.Sim G wrote:...

By legalizing drugs an entire revenue stream is denied and all the related gang / turf war that goes with it.
The police will have huge resources freed up at a stroke to concentrate on other crime.
Drugs will become safer - because purchasers will be able to buy them from regulated outlets with quality and health controls in place instead of stuff cut with god knows what. Users will know exactly what they're using and perhaps not die whilst their 'friends' try to weigh up whether to risk calling an ambulance or see if they ride it out for fear of getting the police involved.
Recreational users, who may well be otherwise be 'solid' citizens won't risk losing their jobs or getting banged up for what would otherwise be a 'victimless crime' were it not for all the other crime that occurs in order for them to enjoy their tipple.
People that need help will be able to seek it out without fear of the above.
And finally, it may even reduce the use of drugs - part of the allure is that it's seen as 'rebellious' and 'cool'. If the government allows it ... well it may end up the way of tobacco use which is on the decline.
People inevitably point to driving under the influence being a risk. No more than alcohol, I say. And there are reliable roadside tests available now that will allow the police to hoick the irresponsible from the roads in the same manner.
As legal firearm owners know, just because we have them doesn't mean we'll abuse them. If people can drink responsibly then they can use drugs responsibly. And those that can't ... well they were always going down THAT route anyhow.
As I say, I think it's an avenue worth exploring. If it works out in Scotland then it could be rolled out across the UK.
Everything else has been tried.
The Government should embrace it - tax revenue is waning due to people giving up smoking / buying electric cars they need new blood to pimp off.

Unless the drugs are supplied totally free to users it will never work .
Gang and turf wars will actually increase .

Well clearly legitimate regulated businesses would take their place. Why would people buy dodgy stuff from dodgy people when they could go to an establishment selling a known product that isn't cut with crap? It'd be akin to going down to the pub.MistAgain wrote:"By legalizing drugs an entire revenue stream is denied and all the related gang / turf war that goes with it."

I suppose people might miss knowing their tipple cost a few lives along the way, some child abuse, and a bit of tit for 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' terrorism in order to reach them. Gives it a bit of excitement, I suppose.
But most sentient people would probably prefer a product sans guilt and misery, like buying Pepsi off the shelf. You know it's bad for you but nobody else suffered in its delivery to your fridge.

I watched The Americas with Simon Reeve the other night and he went to a small town in Colorado where cannabis had been legalised and was available from a dispensary. The police officer he was with said drug-related crime had reduced to virtually zero and the tax revenue it generated had been put back into the town and its infrastructure etc had been massively improved as a result.
