Muzzle Brakes

Moderators and muzzle brakes seem to be unnecessary on small calibers.

On my large caliber rifles I find a moderator aids control, besides the noise advantages.

I was curious about muzzle brakes but after reading the responses these seem quite an anti-social solution versus a moderator, they provide the control but not the sound dampening, the main benefit seems to be that you do not need them on your ticket.

Seriously, I don't have a problem with them as long as they're at least 4 metres away from me when I'm shooting................if you really need one to help you hold your rifle steady, go for it.......

Muzzle brake users don't normally bother me but I was at the range yesterday trying some loads I'd worked up and the chap on the bench next to me had the muzzle brake from hell!!!......I wouldn't have minded but he couldn't hit a cows ass with a shovel either!

That's interesting.......a year or so ago, there was a guy next to us with a short barrelled 308 fitted with one..........he couldn't hit Jack Sh*t either.

The simple fact is that muzzle brakes can be very disconcerting to those close to one on the firing line, especially if you are shooting under a roof, as is the case on my club range. Some are barely noticeable but some are, as the people in my club said of mine, 'obnoxious'. It all depends upon the design, and how much spacing can be left between shooters on the line.

My long-range shooting club just bans them altogether, but others have more pragmatic solutions. In one club where I shoot, those with muzzle brakes are squadded onto the grass firing point next to the roofed one, to reduce the reflection of the sound waves off the roof. Another good suggestion is making up a separate squad of all those who's rifles are equipped with muzzle brakes. A little consideration goes a long way.

Of course here I am speaking of centre-fire calibres. I have no experience whatever of a .22RF with a muzzle brake. I have never even seen a .22RF with a brake, but I do not shoot small bore target so that could explain it.

Why would anybody put a muzzle brake on .22lr? - seems like a complete waste of time.
