6mm Hardox

Afternoon All,

I picked up a dueling tree predominantly for rimfire but having done a bit of testing it works best at 50yds or less. As we have a bench at the range for 100m i was thinking about whether it would stand up to a larger calibre at 100 and keep the rimfires for 50.

Does anyone got a ballpark on the 6mm hardox as centrefire is usually 10mm hardox. I'd rather not just punch holes in the plates!

One shot should give you the answer.

Depends on the calibre, the velocity and the bullet. Centre fire is far to vague to be meaningful.

I use 3/4" thick steel gongs, my 17 Hornet will put a 1/4" crater in the plate and my 45-70 won't dent it just leaving a lead smear. Both top end loadings for the cartridge and at 100 yrds range.

How thick is 6mm which I am assuming is a size and not just part of the steel nomenclature.

I was hoping we might get away with 223 at 100yds, and i suspect expanding would help.

To put things into perspective, this is a lump of reasonable quality steel 20.0mm thick (Just over 3/4") shot with a 22-250 at around 220 yards.

The tree came from TT and i can get a set of 10mm plates for £95 but they definitely wont work for rimfire and i was just seeing if anyone had tried 6mm with some lower power centrefire ammunition so they would be dual purpose. I checked with TT and they don't recommend CF on 6mm at all. However, i suspect there is a tipping point at which CF energy can be absorbed by a 6mm plate.
