Gun insurance

#1 Post by PeterN »

I was wondering if anyone has a separate insurance policy for theft, loss or damage to their guns or do you cover them within the house contents insurance? I have been adding up what it would cost to buy all my rifles and shotguns again at current market rates and it comes to quite a bit. I paid a lot less for them over the years I have been collecting. My house contents cover is up for renewal and the sum insured would be short if I had to buy all my guns again if they all got nicked or the house burnt down. I have been looking at Gunplan and wondered if anyone has any other suggestions. The current house contents insurance is with Prudential.
Regards
Peter.

Mine are covered mainly by the house insurance which has a £2000 per item standard limit. I currently have one rifle on there as a 'special' item as the rifle and scope combo would (have) cost £4k+ to replace. As I no longer have that scope on it I will be removing it from the high value items list. That insurance only covers them while they're in the house however.

I believe membership of at least one of the organisations i'm a member of gives some limited cover for firearms away from my property but I doubt it would be full coverage.

I didn't have firearm insurance (I did have third party insurance via 3C), always seemed quite expensive, however, when I renewed my house insurance I found out I could add them to that. As 'Blackstuff' above regarding the price limit, I have listed firearms and scopes.

Same here...on the house insurance as "personal possessions" with a £2000 limit per item.

Plus my NRA membership also includes cover for theft and 3rd party liability.

When I started shooting 10 years or so ago I told my house insurance company that a cabinet was being installed. (On the basis that it was a material fact that I should probably tell them about and also my first rifle was over the single claim limit.) They said that the policy would be cancelled if I installed a cabnet, just installed and not even housing any firearms! I now check the wording to ensure that sporting goods specifically includes firearms and then list any above the single claim limit with basic names.
The above post probably contains sarcasm or some other form of attempted wit, please don't take it to heart.

NRA individual membership includes shooting equipment to £10k worldwide, as well as public liability £10M. If all you need is the insurance it can be done for a lot less than membership, but it is in effect a decent discount given the limitations of insuring firearms and equipment on your house policy.

Peter,

Despite being a member of both the NRA and BASC, I am also with Gun Plan...

It was far cheaper to take out a specialised policy than to try to cover the equivalent value from within a Home Insurance Policy.

It all depends upon the total value held together with the highest value of each or numerous items.

Thanks for the replies. I am an NRA and BASC member. I had the values in my head as what I paid for them but you don't seem to be able to buy a Swedish Mauser or SMLE for the £85 each that I paid for them anymore. If you buy one or two guns a year for thirty years and don't sell any, the numbers creep up so current replacement value has gone quite high. I have seen the price Gunplan want but will give the Pru a ring tomorrow and see how much they want to up the value.

If firearms are NOT specifically excluded in writing under "sporting goods", and the values per item are sensible, I'd say you'd have a very good case if they wriggled over a claim........

I use Hiscox. I have never made a claim, so I don't know how good or bad they are when the brown stuff hits the fan.
