Pointless rifle projects

Someone mentioned to me the other day that "XXXX, a mutual friend was building an XXX - another pointless exercise" Neither of these chaps are on the forum (Phewwww...) I cannot think of a pointless exercise when it comes to rifles, rifle builds are a very personal thing and and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in fact I can think of a few interesting projects in the hands of forum members right now and I include myself with my odd muzzle loading pistol project, interesting projects, certainly not pointless, so is there such a thing as a truly pointless rifle project and if so was it yours and what was it?

EDIT – Not sure I will accept any reference to long range pistol shooting as that is just odd...

I always think it's pointless trying to turn a classic military rifle into a modern competitive rifle and buggering up yet another beautiful old rifle in the process - which are becoming ever more scarce.

Enjoy 'em as they are meant to be enjoyed - original calibre - battle-sights, sling etc.

I agree with both of you! :G
1) There's no such thing as a pointless rifle project - every rifle (like a person) is individual, but
2) Mucking about with a perfectly good historic rifle should not be allowed or attempted!

Anything that promotes shooting in the UK should be welcomed, the UK is too retentive about things and the UK's idiotic and restrictive laws do not help.

As for "pointless rifle project", pointless to WHOM exactly, some bitter jealous boring old f'rt who loves nowt better than to shoot 6 rounds of .22LR a month from a CZ and call him/herself a shooter?

Military weapons, keep them original. Nowt worse than a K98 or even a marlin with an Aimpoint scope or whatever, jeez what's the point (oops now I fall into the same trap)... :lol: :lol:

Far from being pointless I think that there is an absolute JOY in researching & putting together a set of components that you firmly believe will be the next 'must have' rifle / calibre....especially if it lives up to expectations! Of course its your baby but we all want people to love our baby don't we!

Completely agree the historic/ military rifle comments (unless its getting the best of original parts to replace older or duff ones I guess?) .... why would you try to convert it into something else when you could have bought a better 'something else' from the proper modern components?

Planning and then discussing Christel's 22C was great fun and an exciting time, Stuart Anselm and I spoke a few times about the concept and specification of her 22-47 including the chambering, the action, barrel and aesthetics of the rifle plus the bullet it would use, the moly coating and load and even the characteristics and potential accuracy. It was the first wildcat rifle we had ever had built so it was an unknown to us as such.

After it came home it was modified further, I shortened the butt section, fitted a T rail at the front and a bag rider at the back and I know Christel looks on it as a totally unique rifle which I think it is. Making these changes took it from being just another rifle to her rifle, the barrel even has 22 CHRISTEL on the side.

Best of all was watching her shoot it and close down any doubts as to it's and her ability.

IMHO - there isn't a thing as a "pointless" shooting project, only projects that some will like and some wont.

While I agree that cutting a classic-military rifle, what our American friends called "Bubba'd", is heresey. At the end of the day, the rifle is the property of the owner to do with what they will - and if it encourages shooting, bring it on.
