Record Orders at Sturm, Ruger & Co.

The gun business is booming.

Record Orders at Sturm, Ruger & Co.

Sturm, Ruger & Co. (NYSE: RGR) said it received orders for more than one million units in the first quarter, forcing the company to stop accepting new orders.

"Despite the company's continuing successful efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity...consequently, the company has temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders," CEO Michael O. Fifer said in a statement.

Here's what's fueling the feeding frenzy in firearms...

In good times and bad, sales of firearms have proven steady and relatively immune to the economic cycles that trouble other industries.

But nothing fuels gun sales like uncertainty, and nothing fuels uncertainty like an election--- especially one that puts a Democrat in the White House.

Whether that's rational or not, firearm sales increased dramatically in the wake of the financial crisis in 2008 and as Barack Obama took office in 2009.

"People were rushing out to buy guns, because they were worried [President Obama] was going to take their guns away," William J. Vizzard, professor of criminal justice at California State University told the Huffington Post. "He didn't have a single proposal on the table for gun laws. It defies reason. It's a culture unto itself." (Actually he is talking bollox, Obama has been anti gun throughout his career)

Now, Americans are once again scrambling to buy guns on fears that the president will be reelected. They reason that as a second-term president, he will be free to impose new restrictions on firearms without having to worry about getting re-elected.

In fact, according to National Rifle Association (NRA) President Wayne LaPierre, the administration's policies are "part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment during his second term."

For decades, the NRA has been beating the drum of individual gun ownership as a sacred part of American freedom, wielding its power in Washington to beat back proposed restrictions on the right to bear arms.

The general state of the economy is also helping to boost gun stocks.

Americans are constantly bombarded with media reports of doomsday scenarios, dollar devaluation and economic chaos.

Many take this end-of-the-world scenario very seriously, and are arming themselves to the teeth to protect themselves.

"Indicators reveal growing interest among citizens, particularly women, in owning a firearm for personal and home protection," the NSSF noted in its statement.

There is a difference between being anti-gun and having gun control laws on the table. Obama is demonstrably anti-gun: He is on record (in voting record, writings, interviews, speeches etc) as supporting a ban on semi-automatic firearms, a ban on 'assault weapons', a ban on handguns, mandatory training for gun owners, licensing of gun ownership, gun registration, a 'one gun a month' limit, a ban on .223, .308 and 7.62x39mm ammunition, and a ban on concealed carry. However, he has never made any moves to enact such legislation in Congress.

So Vizzard does has his facts right, but his conclusion - that preemptively buying guns defies reason - does not follow. Just because your wife hasn't filed for divorce yet, doesn't mean you shouldn't suspect that she is going to and make appropriate preparations when she has made it clear she wants one. Equally, just because Obama hasn't actually pushed for new federal gun laws doesn't mean he won't in his second term, should he get one, when he has nothing to lose - so there is a substantial reason to prepare.

As to Ruger's gun sales, I think it's much less to do with panic buying and much more to do with Ruger's 21st century turnaround. They have gone from selling .22 pistols and rifles, hunting revolvers, bolt action and single-shot hunting and target rifles, and semi-automatic 'ranch rifles' with only low-capacity magazines for civilians... To incredibly popular concealed carry guns like the LCP, LCR, LC9, and SR9C, the Gunsite Scout rifle, their own 1911 pistols and AR rifles, Mini-14s and Mini-30s with normal capacity magazines, tactical .22s, etc. There was little growth in their old 'hunting and target' market, especially at Ruger's position in the market - but concealed carry, home defence, action sports and law-enforcement are rapidly growing markets with a lot of demand for the affordable high quality that Ruger offers.

Obama is circumventing laws and due legal processes to set up his anti gun agenda. Should he be re-elected (god forbid) then he will select his anti gun cronies to ensure his hatred of guns and the law abiding that own them is satisfied. Of course what the US does we follow so him being relected IS a problem.

He already runs guns illegally through Project Fast & Furious, for which he should be impeached and Holder et all should be arrested and tried for gun running to Mexican drug cartels and accomplice to murder fof a Border guard..let alone who knows how many Mexicans.

Obama and Clinton will sign up to the UN global gun ban on law abiding citizens if he is back for another 4 years, yet not ONE proposal will disarm despots, drug gangs or terrorist groups...then what??

Obama brought race into the Traybon Martin case and that will certainly be used to attack the laws allowing self defence and gun ownership. His hatred of guns and the law abiding that own them will extend to hunting and sporting use, of that there is no doubt. A TOTAL ban on ALL guns in the US is not out of his tiny mind. Like happene din the UK, back door methods are being used, like denyoing open land one used for recreational shooting, forcing illegal gun registrations and harassment of legal shooters through contrived "crimes" that result in a lesser charge and a felony conviction for the hapless victim..and NO GUNS!

i am sure our US friends on here have a view on this scenario too, I wonder what WOULD happen if he were to try national registration and the inevitable confiscation.

I don't often go on US web forums, but when I did a few weeks ago, I noticed the use of teotwawki & shtf and was a bit surprised.

Then of course there is Porcupine (aka the squirrel!) advising on how to bury rifles in the countryside - we're all doomed!
