Case trimmer cutter.

#1 Post by Old Chap »

A minor topic I know, but it would be helpful if anyone has the answer.
I want to buy a cutter in order to make a powered trimmer. Just the cutter on a small shank. The only one I can find is a Forster component from MidwayUK but I refuse to pay that ridiculous postage charge for such a small item. Does anyone know where I can get one with normal postage rates?
Thanks in advance

Is it just the cutter part itself? A lot of the manufacturers use end mills however I suspect you will need a pilot as well.

Yes, just the cutter with a pilot hole, I can make the necessary pilots to suit. I currently use an end mill which I modified to incorporate a pilot but I want to make the new one non-calibre specific.

Hmm.. finding an end mill with a pilot is going to be interesting so why not make your own 2F out of silver steel and harden it? I made a dovetail cutter for a boring tool the other day using the same principle. I did all the machining on the mill and then hardened it when I was happy with the profile.

Try the Lyman Universal case trimmer powered shaft

http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/case ... dapter.php

If you go this route get back to me for a price as I have an account to supply the club with reloading kit, so can beat Midway by quite a margin!!

MidSouth Shooter Supply have the pilots for just over $20 - I have an account there too!
Last goodies I bought from them arrived in under a week....

Saddler - thanks for the prompt reply and the offer, but these are both long shafts. I only want the cutter which will be about 1 inch long. I have only seen the Forster one. Thanks anyway.

Ovenpaa - I make all sorts of different cutters for my hobby (clockmaking) but I thought, just for once , I would buy one! End mills are much too long for what I want to do so I will probably end up making it.
Thanks anyway.

If it's just the cutting head you're after what about the Lee one?, the shaft is 1/2" diameter

http://leeprecision.com/cutter.html

Only $4, Lee charge $13 shipping so it may be worth buying some other bits at the same time.
There's room for all Gods creatures, next to the mash and gravy :)

phaedra1106 that is a good idea! I can temper that down and machine it to exactly what I want.
And it's available readily within the UK.
Thanks

David,

Need a lot of couage to make such tool when it is just to find the right source.

The problem I always found with OEM case trimmer cutters was the poor steel quality and poor sharpeness.

I used countersink borers of HSS-Co with removeable pilots. The smaller one in the range I used had a 4mm pilot hole, which allowed all calibre pilots..The pilot was the only part I fouund necessary to make to calibre. Those tools cut beautifully with the minimum of burrs, even on soft annealed brass..

If you need specific gunsmithig cutters, visit Triebel Guntools. Not in the cheap range, but top quality and no other source in Europe.

BTW; have you dowloaded their chambers dimensiosn?
