Fake Boresnake warning.

#1 Post by Hauptman »

I just got around to trying a Hoppes 308 boresnake which I'd bought a couple of months ago. I had placed it in a drawer, and noticed that the "Phosphor bronze" section stuck firmly to a magnet that was in there !! The packaging looked like it was genuine, but with hindsight, the price, £14, suggests otherwise.
Although close inspection indicates the bristles are copper plated, phosphor bronze they ain't ! Now I might be a bit paranoid about this, but the thought of whipping a hard steel wire brush through the muzzle/crown of any of my rifles seems like a really bad idea.
Any comments? I'm going to see if I can contact Hoppes in case it is genuine.

£14? Blimey, you were had - the rest of us with dodgy ones got them for around £7! Good point though about the brush, I just tried mine and the magnet sticks as you suggest. Caution is certainly required.

I've just tried my 'fake' and my 100% real one and the magnet stuck to both!

Thinking about it, I expect the brush filaments are twisted into a steel wire core...

Doz is correct, I pulled one of the wires out and it's not attracted by the magnet.................panic over :shakeshout:

Prefer the OTIS kits myself!!

The Bore Snakes ARE made in China - and as with ANYTHING made officially there it's only a matter of time until the same factory is making lower quality/same quality versions

boresnakes are 'ok' for a scattergun but i would never put one anywhere near any of my rifles!

A few reasons

1, potential damage to the crown
2, returning crud back to the bore
3, actually not that efficient
4, won't work with JB paste
