Hire of Savage barrel nut wrench urgently needed
Can anyone help with this, please? I have a new barrel to fit to a Savage F/TR and it's proving nigh on impossible to get hold of a wrench at a sensible price, or even at all....................the Savage importer, Edgar Bros, "doesn't get involved with this aspect", and "anyway, Savage stuff is taking 5 months to arrive"
I'm happy to pay for a loan of one.............

You could try and get hold of a suitable sized 'C' spanner from a tool suppliers or even a bike shop-it wont locate as well as the multi toothed original job but may get you out of a fix. I will also try and find an engineering company that has a scanner for a laser cutter as it looks like these could be turned out for pennies on a laser cutter. Shame that the two companies that I use would need a copy of the dfx file to be able to knock them out.
Re: Hire of Savage barrel nut wrench urgently needed
Try Stuart Anselm at Osprey he has one and may have a spare.
Re: Hire of Savage barrel nut wrench urgently needed
Brownells are out of stock.............Midway UK (assuming they have one) want £39 quid plus their extortionate postage.
There's definitely a small market here for someone with access to a laser cutter, and who isn't greedy...........come on China, where are you?
I'm even looking at drilling/hand filing a bit of 3mil mild steel, I have the new nut as a pattern..........
Or maybe plenty of penetrating oil, a touch of hot air, and judicious use of a brass drift and a small hammer.
It's just breaking that initial grip without mashing the nut. Apparently, the factory puts anything up to 80 ft/lbs on them.
Re-tightening is not a problem. Strap wrench plus a tap or two with aforementioned drift.

Re: Hire of Savage barrel nut wrench urgently needed
what does the nut look like? A bar with a hole in it and a cap head screwed in makes a good secure peg spanner when needed.

Thanks for your replies. C-spanner was my first thought but if it's really tight, I dunno...........
How is a dfx file obtained? Is there any way I could derive it from the spare nut that I have?
The face that mates to the receiver is flat, and has the exact pattern needed.
If this was laid on a flat-bed photo quality scanner................?
Ovenpaa, it's exactly like that with a 1/2" square hole, and its about 200mm long..........

Alternately, the diameter of the nut at the base of the cutouts is 31mm, and the outside diameter is 33mm, making the lug cutouts 1mm deep. Each cutout is 3.25mm wide.
There are 8 equidistant cutouts.
Also required is a square hole for 1/2" socket positioned 30mm from the edge of the hole. This would enable accurate tightening with a torque wrench.
Anyone know if this is enough info to design it? Could it be done in something like Turbocad?

Sorry Meaty, I pm'd this to you in a senior moment sign01 .......must be the heat........

Best I have is a length of 38x12,5mm aluminium (6082 T6) I can bore it to 33,0mm and then tap the end M8 and give you a stainless cap head, you would then have to screw it in, mark the orientation and then file some flats on it to emulate the 3,25 cut out. If I had time I could machine them to suit but you are in a rush...
Re: Hire of Savage barrel nut wrench urgently needed
Here's a couple of pics of the nut.
